Atheist Richard Dawkins thinks that
Dawkins’ inflammatory rhetoric and bad reasoning are misleading millions of readers who don’t see the holes in his argument. In a lively and fair analysis, Hahn and Wiker expose the shoddy reasoning, logical blunders, and factual errors of Dawkins’ bestseller The God Delusion. Along the way, Hahn and Wiker offer a cogent and convincing argument for God’s existence.
Rarely, if ever, in my many years as a professor of philosophy did I ever have the opportunity to read such a compelling argument.
—Antony Flew, author, There Is a God: How the World’s Most Notorious Atheist Changed His Mind
Dr. Scott Hahn and Dr. Benjamin Wiker, show, again and again, that atheists like Richard Dawkins are putting forth shoddy arguments, and once those arguments are dismantled by cool reason, there is very little left.
—Dinesh D’Souza, Rishwain Research Scholar, Hoover Institution
In a better world than ours there would have been no need for Answering the New Atheism. But under the circumstances, I’m grateful to Dr. Sott Hahn and Dr. Benjamin Wiker for their essential service in coolly, rationally taking apart Richard Dawkins’ inflamed rhetoric and exposing the absurdities, and the dangers, at its heart. Their final chapter is a particularly chilling, important reminder of what Dawkins’ secular faith would lead to if it were more widely embraced.
—David Klinghoffer, author, Shattered Tablets: Why We Ignore the Ten Commandments at Our Peril
Answering the New Atheism is a superb exposé of Dawkins’ The God Delusion. Systematically and lucidly, Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker dissect and dispose of the fundamental errors that riddle Dawkins’ attempt to demonize the divine. Dawkins has declared a jihad against religion and his main weapons are diatribe and caricature. But the authors refuse to respond in kind and instead turn to reason, the one tool that Dawkins seems to disdain. As readable and humorous as it is rigorously reasoned, Answering the New Atheism is the best antidote in the marketplace for Dawkinitis.
—Roy Abraham Varghese, editor, Cosmos, Bios, Theos
Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker patiently, thoroughly pick apart the reasoning of Richard Dawkins until very little is left standing. I highly recommend Answering the New Atheism to anyone who wants to watch scientific atheist bullies get their comeuppance.
—Michael K. Behe, professor of biochemistry, Lehigh University
When two Catholic intellectual heavyweights collaborate on a project, expectations are high. Scott Hahn and Benjamin Wiker, scholars and bestselling authors, do not disappoint us in Answering the New Atheism. As coauthors they have produced a gem—a book that provides a clear response to the atheistic secularism of Richard Dawkins. In a logical, measured, and accessible manner they provide the reader with what is needed ‘to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have . . . [doing so] with gentleness and respect’ (1 Peter 3:15–16).
—Regis J. Flaherty, author, Last Things First
Benjamin Wiker holds a PhD in theological ethics from Vanderbilt University, and he has taught at Marquette University, St. Mary’s University, Thomas Aquinas College, and Franciscan University. He is the author of several books including, Moral Darwinism: How We Became Hedonists, A Meaningful World: How the Arts and Sciences Reveal the Genius of Nature (coauthored with Jonathan Witt), The Mystery of the Periodic Table, and Architects of the Culture of Death (coauthored with Donald DeMarco). He is now a fulltime, freelance writer. Dr. Wiker writes regularly for a variety of journals, including Catholic World Report, New Oxford Review, and Crisis Magazine, and he is a regular columnist for the National Catholic Register.
In Scripture Matters: Essays on Reading the Bible from the Heart of the Church Dr. Hahn takes a penetrating look into the depths of Scripture, showing the reader how to uncover its many layers of meaning and inspiration.
Scripture Matters serves as both an instructional guide to reading the Bible and a delightful meditation on the grandeur of God’s Word. Dr. Hahn effectively illustrates his discussion with the writings of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Saint Josemaría Escrivá, Cardinal Ratzinger, and other exemplary scholars of Scripture who truly speak “from the heart of the Church.”
Scott Hahn has done it again! Through a collection of challenging and fascinating essays on biblical matters, he has prepared our minds and hearts to be open to the Holy Spirit at work in the life-giving Word of God.
—Stuart W. Swetland, director, The Newman Foundation
Scripture Matters is a masterful guide to reading and understanding the Bible—a work that combines intelligence and depth with a wonderful readability. Dr. Hahn’s chapters on historical criticism, the Real Presence, and the place of Scripture in Catholic teaching are worth reading again and again.
—Charles J. Chaput, archbishop of Denver
[Dr. Scott Hahn’s] new book, Scripture Matters, reflects not only a profound theology of God’s Word . . . but also analyzes and critiques some of the more prevalent errors which have crept into discussions of the interpretation and proper use of Holy Scripture in the lives of individuals and the life of the Church. I heartily recommend this work for students and all who wish to enhance the effective role of Holy Scripture in their lives.
—John J. Myers, archbishop of Newark
One does not have to agree with Dr. Hahn in all particulars of Scripture Matters to see that he succeeds admirably in stirring things up in the world of contemporary Catholic biblical scholarship in the United States. This book should prove to be a useful stimulus for getting all of us who love Scripture to come to terms with it in our lives.
—James Swetnam, distinguished fellow, St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology
Dr. Hahn has provided in Scripture Matters an invaluable series of essays that will not only help to keep students of Sacred Scripture on track, but also give them a sense of certitude concerning the Church’s long-standing tradition of interpretation. After reading Scripture Matters, you will jump into Scripture study with a renewed zeal. Dr. Hahn’s excitement for Scripture will rub off on you—get ready!
—Jeff Cavins, editor, Catholic Scripture Study
In Scripture Matters, biblical theologian and teacher Scott Hahn introduced ordinary lay Catholics to the Catholic approach to interpreting the Bible. His presentation of good, sound biblical scholarship dealt squarely with questions of historical criticism, the Real Presence, and the place of Scripture in Catholic teaching.
Now, in Spirit and Life, Hahn presents nine selected essays that teach the faithful to “read the Bible from the heart of the Church.” Hahn explains that Scripture is only fully received within the context of the Mass. The Bible and the liturgy were made for each other, and to read Scripture in the heart of the Church is to read it with Eucharistic eyes. It is here that we see the great juncture of love: written Word and incarnate Word.
Scott Hahn, in his writing, teaching and lectures, has helped so many people grasp more fully the wisdom of God found in the pages of sacred Scripture. His book, Spirit and Life: Essays on Interpreting the Bible in Ordinary Time, is one more example of his scholarship, teaching ability and personal appreciation of the Word of God. In this work he addresses in an engaging and informative manner how to “read the Bible from the heart of the Church.” Readers, whether one is a scholar or newly undertaking serious biblical study, will come to appreciate more deeply how the Word of God gives new meaning to the daily events of life.
—Donald W. Wuerl, archbishop of Washington DC
The words “ordinary time” in the title might mislead a browser into thinking that this book is a guide to the lectionary. It is not. The best sections present some of Pope Benedict XVI’s theological work, especially in the area of scripture. Indeed, Hahn believes that the Holy Father’s biblical Christology will have the same impact on theology, preaching, and religious education as has John Paul II’s theology of the body. Connecting scripture, liturgy, and the communal life of the Church creates a nexus for finding the real Jesus. And reading the Scriptures through the liturgy not only recovers the origins of the inspired texts but also gives them richer meaning for today. Once again, Dr. Hahn is to be thanked for his efforts to bring the Bible into the heart of the Church and her sons and daughters. Spirit and Life had much to offer me as a pastor and preacher.
—R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Steubenville
The prayer at hand has been called many things: the Pater Noster, the Our Father, the Model Prayer, the Lord’s Prayer. In Understanding “Our Father,” Dr. Scott Hahn presents a unique meditation on this common prayer, leading readers to consider its wealth of meaning. Relying on the Fathers and Doctors of the Church as well as on Sacred Scripture, Dr. Hahn takes each of the seven petitions of the Our Father individually and draws out the implications of the prayer given to us by Christ Himself.
By blending his own scriptural insights on the Lord’s Prayer with the thoughts of four great Church Fathers, Professor Hahn writes a prescription for what ails many of our families—too little prayer. I urge husbands and wives to read and discuss this book and share its wisdom with their children by devotedly praying the Our Father as a family every day. Immeasurable blessings will follow.
—Charles J. Chaput, archbishop of Denver
With remarkable clarity, keen personal insight, and solid catechesis, Dr. Scott Hahn once more takes the reader into a critical element of the faith: the nature and importance of prayer. His personal meditations on the Lord’s Prayer, combined with theological reflections from four saints and Fathers of the Church, are refreshing to the soul—nearly as refreshing as prayer itself!
—Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, archbishop of New York
Scott Hahn, in the first part of this book, draws on the experience of his own journey of faith, which led him to the Catholic Church, and on the wisdom of the Church Fathers to throw light on the essential spirit of prayer found in the Our Father. The extracts from Saints Cyprian, Cyril of Jerusalem, John Chrysostom, and Augustine, which make up the second part of the book, are a precious source of insight into Christian prayer. I hope the book will be used by many families, for those who use it will find their life with God strengthened and enriched.
—Francis Cardinal George, archbishop of Chicago
This is a great book for all Catholics, but it is an essential book for Catholic fathers. The essence of restoring fatherhood is turning the hearts of fathers back to God the Father. Read this important book slowly and prayerfully. It will deepen your faith and transform your family life.
—Steve Wood, founder, St. Joseph’s Covenant Keepers
The indefatigable Dr. Hahn has come up with a miniature masterpiece, miniature in its winsome simplicity, a masterpiece in its insight and depth. It merits a myriad of readers—and a miniature doxology.
—Robert I. Bradley, advisor, Catholics United for Faith
Scott Hahn brings excitement and scholarship to his inspirational work on the Lord’s Prayer. Once again, Scott takes what is familiar to us and, with refreshing insight, inspires us to a renewed zeal.
—Michael Scanlan, chancellor, Franciscan University of Steubenville
