“For freedom Christ has set us free,” the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Galatians. “Stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery” (Gal 5:1). But what does the Apostle Paul mean when he writes of our freedom in Christ?
“Freedom is an important Christian virtue,” New Testament scholar Dr. Douglas Moo notes in Logos Mobile Ed course NT341 Book Study: Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. “But Paul wants to make sure we understand what that freedom really is.”
Dr. Moo clarifies the unique meaning of Christian freedom: “The freedom that God has won for us in Christ is a freedom now to turn ourselves toward God and others. He emphasizes the importance, therefore, of love.”
For Christians, freedom is not a virtue to enjoy for ourselves so much as it is to be used for others’ benefit. In Christ, we are free for God and for others.
“For you were called to freedom, brothers,” Paul continues in his letter to the Galatians. “Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Gal 5:13).
