Lyman Beecher is not only one of the most famous preachers of the nineteenth century, but is also the father of several famous children, including minister Henry Ward Beecher and author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Beecher was influential in the Second Great Awakening, along with Charles Finney, Barton Stone and Peter Cartwright. Lyman Beecher (1775-1863) was born in Connecticut, the son of a blacksmith. He was educated at Yale and later, at Yale Divinity School. He was the father of thirteen children, many of whom grew up to be famous in their own right, including Henry Ward Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe. He was a staunch Presbyterian Calvinist, promoting wide-spread evangelism and revival.
