This book offers a new way of understanding Catholic social ethics. The narrative expands its context backward into the pre-biblical past and outward into the social teachings of other religions and civilizations. It also tells a story that shows the continuity between the different eras of Catholic tradition, and it brings in the witness of heroic men and women to the possibility of living by our beliefs. It portrays our social ethics as a work in progress. Our beliefs have been put forward clearly by official teachers; they have been integrated, to some extent into our institutions; they need to be better explained to the world. This work is intended to give students a deeper understanding of Catholic social ethics, so that they may more effectively communicate the powerfully attractive Catholic vision of life. It may even give some of those well-versed in Catholic ethics some new insights. The author draws on his experience as a theologian, a teacher, and a pastor to present information in a readable form. Having wished such a resource were available to him as a teacher, he has taken it upon himself to write it for others.

“Father Frank Colborn—seminary professor, ecumenist, and pastor—has spent years immersing himself in the history of social thought. His present book, ecumenical in approach but focused on the Catholic tradition, introduces thinkers, synthesizes positions, outlines key principles, and raises provocative questions, always leaving the students free to apply what they have read to contemporary issues. Easy to read, the book would make a useful introduction for undergraduates as well as an excellent text for graduate students interested in the development of social ethics.”

—Thomas P. Rausch, SJ, Loyola Marymount University

“This amazing book on the history and context of Catholic social action is a superb study of the rich and pluralistic tradition of Catholic social action. By multidisciplinary study (including theology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, history, and archeology) Professor Colborn helps any reader understand not only the profound content of this tradition but also—by his unique analysis—its many historical contexts. It is an original and brilliant book.”

—David Tracy, University of Chicago

“Frank Colborn’s concise but comprehensive study of Catholic social ethics makes an outstanding, seminal contribution to the field. He presents ethical thought and practice from pre-historic origins moving into a future still unfolding. In taking a contextual and narrative approach, he has produced a readable text appropriate for introductory college courses and adult education. Colborn makes the much-needed contribution of a seasoned pastor and wise teacher to the realization of a discerning church rather than one overly concerned with regulations.”

—Allan Figueroa Deck, SJ, Loyola Marymount University
