Union with Christ is the central truth of the whole biblical teaching about salvation. The entirety of our relationship with God can be summed up in this doctrine. Yet when people ask what this union actually is, we flounder. The incarnation shows that God has made us to be united with him, and God has given us his Word to enable us to understand the nature of this union. Explore this doctrine from Scripture with Robert Letham, along with some help from the church fathers up through modern theologians.
“The basis of our union with Christ is Christ’s union with us in the incarnation. We can become one with him because he first became one with us. By taking human nature into personal union, the Son of God has joined himself to humanity. He now has a human body and soul, which he will never jettison.” (Page 21)
“Moreover, not only did he create them all, but he did so in such a way that he is their head. Creation was made in Christ.” (Pages 12–13)
“The Trinity created us with a capacity to live in him, as creatures in and with our Creator. The incarnation proves it. If it were not so and could not be so, then Jesus Christ—God and man—could not be one person, for the difference between Creator and creature would be so great that the incarnation would not be possible.” (Page 98)
“salvation finds its ultimate fulfillment in the union of humanity with God seen in the incarnate Christ” (Page 41)
“To be united to Christ, we need to be connected to Christ by the Holy Spirit through faith.” (Page 42)
