Ephemeral observations meet spiritual resilience in B. Miller's poetry debut, Flutter By, composed over the past four years. Perspectives on life's torments and absurdities are starkly confronted, with some solace sprinkled in. This collection is for anyone at the intersection of the abyss and God's caress.
“Flutter By explores both the sacred and the mundane,
imbuing life’s darkness with light, expressing B. Miller’s
observations with passion while reaching out to the divine. This
book will take you on a journey across the world from New York to
France, from marching in the streets to the waters of the mikvah,
from the darkest depths of the Shoah to the holy place where love
resides. At times personal and topical, there is something for
every poetry aficionado woven within its pages.”
—D. L. Lang, Vallejo poet laureate (2017–2019)
“B. Miller is a promising voice in the contemporary poetic scene.
The crowdedness of images in this collection is breathtaking,
unfolding in a spontaneous flow of lyrical lines, while stylistic
feats are abundant in a restless fashion.”
—Ahmed Elbeshlawy, author of Unappeasable Ghosts
“Miller’s poetry is striking. Stream of consciousness,
conversational. Wistful. Savvy. Like life, a little happy, a little
sad.”
—Yosef Baskin, technical writer and songwriter
“Miller’s poetry emerges with wings to give a unique and
fascinating glimpse of memories, reflections, observations,
questions, and revelations. Her snapshot sketches weave a vivid
collage of poems from a variety of forms and styles, creating a
chrysalis of words cocooned and nurtured by circumstance, places,
experiences, and people from the past that shape perception of the
present.”
—Peter V. Dugan, Nassau County poet laureate (2017–2019)
“Each poem in Flutter By drips with poignancy. This
startling collection sends us through time and space and offers
tastes of emotion, memory, and transformation for a visceral look
at the universe around us.”
—Erynn Crittenden, author of By the Bones
“Flutter By is a courageous and compassionate collection of
poems. Miller bravely depicts grief and human suffering; these
verses challenge us to go beyond platitudes to find truth and
meaning in moments when these are the hardest to find. The poems
are tightly crafted with exquisite rhyming, fresh turns of phrases,
and vivid description which will surprise and delight.”
—Jacquie Buncel, author of Turning the Corner at Dusk
“Miller has the ability to capture the mundane things in life and
bring them to life with poetic zeal and craftsmanship. She not only
sees but deeply perceives what the ordinary eye cannot understand.
She has the keen eye of a poet grounded by life’s circumstances.
She challenges us to look beyond the mirror in front of us. You
will undoubtedly glean wisdom from her work.”
—Brittney Balfour, author of Inscriptions of the Heart
“B. Miller is quirky, introspective, questioning, and imaginative.
To wander through her lines is to enter a labyrinth—with an abysm
at one end and never-forsaken faith at the other.”
—George Elliott Clarke, seventh parliamentary poet laureate of
Canada (2016–2017)
