Overview

The young Sophocles was known for his defeat of Aeschylus, the undisputed master poet, in a dramatic competition. He also changed the face of Greek drama by adding a third actor to the stage and relying less on the chorus for advancing plot. Works like Oedipus the King and Electra transformed the spirit and focus of the genre. The decisions and plights of individuals are the key themes in the tragedies of Sophocles. This volume contains the Greek texts of Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone, Ajax, Electra, Trachiniae, and Philoctetes.
