So many people wonder why they constantly deal with a lack of energy. The answer could be a low-functioning thyroid--even when blood tests say otherwise.

In Tired of Being Sick and Tired, Dr. Michael Berglund addresses the surprising hidden reasons why you, like so many other people, may be struggling to overcome exhaustion, depression, and weight gain.

If your thyroid isn’t working properly, you can eat perfectly, take your vitamins, and still feel sick. What’s worse, the typical blood test to determine low-functioning thyroid doesn’t always give you the whole picture. Dr. Berglund explains the truth that your doctor may not be telling you, including:

  • What tests you should ask for if you suspect your thyroid is the culprit behind your fatigue
  • How traditional thyroid treatments can lead to the thyroid gland becoming even less productive
  • How healthy eating and a new approach to nutrition can put you back on the path to great health

Table of Contents

Introduction

SECTION I: GETTING TO THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM

Chapter 1 Understanding Your Thyroid

This chapter explains the location of thyroid, what it does, how it works in the body, what happens when it doesn’t work properly, etc.

Chapter 2 Overactive Thyroid

This chapter will cover Grave’s disease, hyperthyroidism, symptoms, statistics, etc.

Chapter 3 Underactive Thyroid

This chapter will cover Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (autoimmune disease), hypothyroidism, symptoms, statistics, etc. The symptoms associated with low thyroid are numerous. The thyroid affects almost every cell in the body but the main issues we’re talking about are fatigue, weight gain, cold sensitivities, and acne.

Chapter 4 Why Typical Lab Tests May Not Detect the Real Problem

This chapter will explain the lab tests doctors typically order and why they may not be detecting the problem. I describe lab testing in this area (hormones) as being like a snapshot. And a snapshot of a family is just that: it’s a snapshot. They look very nice and pleasant and they smile but it’s still just a snapshot. It doesn’t show them communicating. Now it may look like they’re good communicators, but that doesn’t mean they are good communicators. (Hormones are a form of communicating from one part of the body to another.)

Chapter 5 Why Typical Treatments May Sidestep the Real Problem

This chapter will explain the treatments (hormone therapy) doctors typically prescribe and why they are simply managing the symptoms rather than dealing with the real problem that is causing the thyroid to function improperly

SECTION II: AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH TO TREATMENT

Chapter 6 Step 1: Getting the Right Tests

(Basal body temp, iodine patches, etc.)

Chapter 7 Step 2: Your Diet Makes a World of Difference

The diet is the most powerful thing someone can change. Poor dietary choices are one of the main reasons I think our country is seeing such an increase in people experiencing low thyroid function. The standard American diet fosters an addiction to sugar; 65 percent of the foods Americans typically eat are refined carbohydrates (sugar, corn syrup, and white flour). Another ingredient in many standard American foods that inhibits thyroid function is gluten. Gluten sensitivity or wheat allergies can suppress thyroid function. This chapter will tell people what to eat and what to avoid so they can begin to naturally balance and manage thyroid function.

Chapter 8 Step 3: Restoring Health to Your Digestive System

This chapter will explain the relationship between the GI tract and thyroid function.

Chapter 9 Step 4: Addressing Adrenal Fatigue

This chapter will explain the toll that low-functioning thyroid takes on the adrenal system and how to restore this system of the body to balance.

Chapter 10 Step 5: Vitamin and Supplement Therapy

This chapter will suggest various vitamins and supplements that can help, but the author wants to take a cautious approach with this and may even decide to leave this out.

Chapter 11 Step 6: Exercise and Rest

This chapter will explain the benefits of exercise and help people with low-functioning thyroid overcome some of the obstacles to exercise that they face because of the symptoms they experience. Rest will be included because energy levels and fatigue are such a big part of what people with hypothyroidism deal with. Some really love exercise. You feel your best when you exercise because you start thinking better and waking up better in the morning, etc. The problem is low energy. The fatigue either catches up with you or you get aches and pains and then have to take some time off. Then energy plummets, and you have to motivate yourself to get going and you’re back where you started. Sensitivity to cold is another major factor in exercise. Most low-thyroid people—I would say probably 60–70 percent—are cold most of the time.

Chapter 12 Step 7: Additional Natural Therapies

Eliminating other toxins from your body and your home environment—mercury, chlorine in your water, fluoride in your water and toothpaste—all of these and many other toxins can inhibit thyroid function. This chapter will explain how to remove as many of these chemical toxins as possible from the home and how to enhance your body’s ability to rid itself of these chemicals so that your thyroid has the greatest chance for normal function.
