H. C. Romanoff wrote Sketches of the Rites and Customs of the Greco-Russian Church in order to present the English with both accurate descriptions of the ceremonies of the Greco-Russian Church, and with an understanding of the domestic life of Russian clerics and middle-class nobles. Collected in remote locations, the habits and characteristics of those observed are generally free from foreign influences. Concerned that the Greco-Russian was becoming lost to view beneath the Protestant and Roman Catholic denominations, Romanoff uses this text in part to define the Church, and what sets it apart from other denominations. This volume includes an introduction by C.M. Yonge, author of The Heir of Redclyffe.
