Overview

The New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE) is the culmination of nearly 20 years of work by a group of nearly 100 scholars and theologians, including bishops, revisers, and editors. The NABRE includes a newly revised translation of the entire Old Testament (including the Book of Psalms) along with the 1986 edition of the New Testament.

The NABRE is a formal equivalent translation of Sacred Scripture, sponsored by the Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, using the best manuscripts available. Work on most books of the Old Testament by forty revisers and a board of eight editors began in 1994 and was completed in 2001. The 1991 revision of the Psalter, the work of thirty revisers and six editors, was further revised by seven revisers and two editors between 2009 and 2010. Work on the New Testament, begun in 1978 and completed in 1986, was the work of thirteen revisers and five editors.

With the Logos Bible Software edition, the New American Bible, rev. ed. (NABRE) is fully integrated with the other resources in Logos, including maps, dictionaries, and numerous other Bible study tools. Most Highlighted Verses in New American Bible: Revised Edition

Genesis 2:7–9: then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. The Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and placed there the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the Lord God made grow every tree that was delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Matthew 22:36–40: “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment.

John 13:33–35: My children, I will be with you only a little while longer. You will look for me, and as I told the Jews, ‘Where I go you cannot come,’ so now I say it to you. I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

1 Corinthians 5:2: And you are inflated with pride. Should you not rather have been sorrowful? The one who did this deed should be expelled from your midst.

Galatians 5:19–25: Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Philippians 4:4–9: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God.

Philippians 4:13: I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.

2 Thessalonians 2:15: Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.

2 Timothy 3:16–17: All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 11:3: By faith we understand that the universe was ordered by the word of God, so that what is visible came into being through the invisible.

Evangelical here. Everyone should have a copy of this translation. The footnotes are also incredibly valuable. This translation is the one that after months of research finally settled the issue for me of whether there are two offices of the church (bishop/presbyter and deacon) or three (deacon, presbyter and bishop). The footnotes sometimes do come from a secular standpoint, but this translation does not advertise itself as a confessional translation. It is an academic translation. If it were the former, Isaiah 7:14 would say "virgin" instead of "young woman," Genesis 18:12 would say "lord" instead of "husband," etc.

Overall this is a good translation. Some of the footnotes are clearly from a liberal higher criticism point of view (e.g. Matt 16:21,Luke 1:46).
