“The profession of innocence in v. 13* permits us to learn that the psalmist belongs among the צדיקים. Why must the צדיק suffer while the רשׁע enjoys prosperity? This was the incalculably difficult question that raised bodily suffering to the point of intolerability. In this affliction the sufferer took refuge with Yahweh (v. 28aβ*), he came to the place of proximity to God (v. 28aα*)—the sanctuary (v. 17a*). Here the ‘end’ (אחריח, v. 17b*) was proclaimed to him who was tormented. And at the same time a certainty was granted him that overcame all affliction and temptation.
