Overview

We face decisions every day—some big, some small. As Christians, we want to submit the choices we face to God’s will. Unfortunately, for many people the process of discerning God’s will has become fraught with fear and confusion, leading to such questions as:

  • Does God really guide us?
  • If so, how?
  • How will I know when he does?
  • What if I make a mistake?

In this biblical and practical exploration of divine guidance, you’ll find solid foundations for understanding how and why God guides his people. Discover the role of Scripture, discernment, wisdom, the counsel of others, and the Holy Spirit in helping you discover God’s will.

Perfect for scholars, students, pastors, and laypeople alike, the Logos edition of God’s Will is fully searchable and easily accessible. Scripture passages link directly to your English translations and to the original language texts, and important theological concepts link to dictionaries, encyclopedias, and a wealth of other resources in your digital library.

Top Highlights

“Pietism, which means living by the belief that nothing in life matters so much as my personal relationship with God, is right and good, but legalism, which means living by the belief that the quality of my relationship with God depends on my turning in some form of correct performance, is neither.” (Page 10)

“God-given warnings of trouble to come are not necessarily admonitions to take avoiding action; they may rather be tests of our sincerity, requiring of us continued obedience with eyes wide open to the consequences.” (Page 15)

“First, the notion spread that getting and following direct guidance from God, as something above and beyond making commonsense decisions in Christian terms, was a matter of great importance in the Christian life. Second, God’s plan for the Christian individual’s life came to be thought of like a travel itinerary in which making planned connections is crucial and missing a connection wrecks the plan and spoils the rest of the journey.” (Page 10)

“Though we know that self-deception here is very easy, we would not short-circuit claims to have received words from God; we would instead test them, as objectively and open mindedly as we can, in light of the teaching of Scripture itself.” (Page 17)

“Bruce Waltke expresses it like this: ‘I think ‘laying out a fleece’ is generally the lazy man’s way to discern the will of God. It requires no work, little discipline, and almost no character development. God has a different program of guidance.” (Page 43)
