Top Highlights

“The OT not only predicts the coming of a Messiah; it also describes and identifies that Messiah.” (Page 49)

“I propose reading the fragmented prophetic visions, not in light of the NT, but in light of the picture that emerges from within the OT itself.” (Page 51)

“Their plan would place a more pliable king on the throne and also put an end to the Davidic house. This threat provides a significant detail in understanding the passage. While some have contended that there would be no reason to foretell the coming of the Messiah, the danger to the house of David explains the messianic concerns of the passage. It was the Davidic covenant (2Sm 7:12–16; 1Ch 17:11–14) that led to the expectation of a future Messiah who would be a descendant of David. Therefore, if Ahaz and the entire royal house were to be destroyed, it would bring an end to the messianic hope. A long-term prophecy of the birth of Messiah would assure the Davidic house and the readers of the scroll of Isaiah that the messianic hope was indeed secure.” (Page 817)

“Earlier, nonmessianic sections of the OT are re-interpreted by later authors and subsequently understood as messianic. That is very far from what I have in mind. What I have in mind is that when the OT reads and interprets itself, as is happening in Dan 7, it does so by drawing on the real, historical intent of the other OT authors. There is no need to speak of a re-interpretation of texts. I think, for example, it is possible to show that the Pentateuch is already thoroughly messianic and that the rest of the OT understands this and expands on it by way of textual commentary and exposition.” (Page 50)

What did Jesus teach when He revealed the Messiah from the Hebrew Bible while on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:26-27)? We get a glimpse of the answer to that question with the Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy. Using a broad group of biblical scholars, including several Messianic Jews, this volume gives an exhaustive explanation of the Messiah in the Old Testament. Every person who wants to understand messianic prophecy needs this book.

—Joel C. Rosenberg, New York Times bestselling author and Bible teacher

Ever wonder what the Lord Jesus shared about Old Testament messianic prophecies as He walked with two of His disciples on the road to Emmaus? This book is probably as close as we’ll ever get to that conversation. I’ve heard a great deal about the need to find Messiah everywhere in the Old Testament, but The Moody Handbook of Messianic Prophecy actually explains how to understand the prophecies about the Messiah within the context of Old Testament literature and New Testament fulfillment. This volume is comprehensive, thoroughly biblical, and brings us a deeper appreciation of Jesus the Messiah. I only regret that it was not available when I began preaching so many years ago.In these pages you’ll find insight for the mind, resources for the biblical student, and food for the soul—a valuable reference book for decades to come.
