Top Highlights

“ The antidote to the flesh is living in the Spirit, not obeying the law of Moses.” (Page 263)

“The Judaizers saw their entire religion and society at threat in Paul’s supposed ‘law-free’ gospel because he was allowing people to find God’s grace without becoming socially conformed to the law.” (Page 25)

“The change of terms to ‘fruit’ evokes a different image: from one of human responsibility to one of divine enablement. The image of fruit has a certain sense of passivity to it; it is the Spirit of God who produces such things, and they grow in the life of the Christian.” (Page 271)

“First, in attempting to apply Galatians we are primarily looking for practices, attitudes, and theological views that add to the gospel in such a manner that (1) the sufficiency of Christ is compromised, and (2) the centrality that the Holy Spirit plays in spiritual freedom is jeopardized.” (Page 38)

“Freedom is not being turned free to be whatever we want (i.e., egocentrism); nor is it some kind of ‘self-discovery’ or ‘self-authentication’ (that, too, is egocentrism); rather, it is being incorporated into the life of God, which he mediates to us through Christ and allows us to enjoy in the Spirit.” (Page 244)

[McKnight’s commentary on Galatians] takes exegesis seriously and still has space left for considerations of what the text is saying in today’s world.

—John Wilderspin, First Lobo Baptist Church, Lobo, Ontario

The NIV Application Commentary meets the urgent need for an exhaustive and authoritative commentary based on the New International Version. This series will soon be found in libraries and studies throughout the evangelical community.

—James Kennedy, senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

It is encouraging to find a commentary that is not only biblically trustworthy but also contemporary in its application. The NIV Application Commentary will prove to be a helpful tool in the pastor’s sermon preparation. I use it and recommend it.

Charles F. Stanley, pastor, First Baptist Church of Atlanta
