Top Highlights

“SBL practice, in keeping with long-standing American style and CMS, calls for placing quotation marks, whether double or single, outside periods and commas.” (Page 14)

“In the bibliography, cite only the theological dictionary.” (Page 95)

“Books of the Bible cited without chapter (or chapter and verse) should ordinarily be spelled out in the main text. Books of the Bible cited with chapter are more commonly abbreviated unless they come at the beginning of the sentence.” (Page 121)

“SBL Press no longer recommends including access dates—the date on which the author last consulted a source—as they are unreliable, unverifiable, and unnecessary.” (Page 84)

“Any manuscript prepared today should be typed using Unicode fonts, particularly if it includes non-Latin alphabets such as Hebrew, Greek, Coptic, or Arabic.” (Page 3)

Every graduate program should make The SBL Handbook of Style a required text.

The SBL Handbook of style is designed for those who are writing papers or dissertations in the field of ancient Near Eastern, Biblical and early Christian Studies. Most matters of style are comprehensively addressed, and where they are not, the editors refer the reader to the Chicago Manual of Style. The book is extremely useful for those who want to standardise their abbreviations and references. Several issues will have to be resolved in the next edition. First, several essential abbreviations are missing from the list of Greek and Latin works. Second, not all abbreviations are located in the same part of the book, and so one has to keep going backwards and forwards to find the appropriate reference. Fourth, the editors sometimes display a dogmatic approach to style. For example they insist that writers ought to use Miriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary for their spelling. This dictionary however is only one alongside many other excellent dictionaries such as, the American Heritage, and the Random House. These criticisms should not detract from the importance and usefulness of this volume, which I recommend wholeheartedly.

Very much excited for this to come out, especially since the second edition has far more references to ancient literature than the first edition. Any idea when this will launch for download? I'm tempted to buy it in print now since I need it for school, but I would rather support Logos.
