Top Highlights

“Such a summary of the facts of redemption within the cultus cannot be a freely devised meditation based on historical events, but must be a reflection of the traditional form in which the faith is presented.” (Page 5)

“It will be our task in the following pages to show at least the principal stages of the process by which this cultic recital developed into the Hexateuch as we have it.” (Page 8)

“The earliest example of the interpolation of the Sinai story into the canonical story of redemption is found in the great prayer of Neh. 9:6ff.” (Page 12)

“We may sum up the result of our enquiry in the following way: even the more or less free accounts of the redemption-story which follow the canonical scheme do not mention the events of Sinai. These events seem rather to have given rise to a tradition of their own, which remained separate from the canonical pattern and only at a very late date became combined with it.” (Page 13)

“occasion for the recital by the individual of this short confessional statement of God’s redemptive activity.” (Page 5)
