Experience the Psalms with Abraham Kuyper.

Well-known as a public figure and theologian, Abraham Kuyper was also, like David, a man after God's own heart. His profound thought was energized by a vibrant faith. It is fitting that the Psalms--the anatomy of the human soul--inspired abundant meditation for Kuyper as he endeavored to apply Christ's Lordship to all of life.

Translated and introduced by James De Jong, these thirty-one meditations on the Psalms reveal the devotion of a seasoned saint who remained faithful to his Lord.

Over 150 devotions from Abraham Kuyper have been collected in Honey from the Rock—available now.

Praise for Ever in Thy Sight

Here are the devotional thoughts of one of the most significant Protestant thinkers of the last 150 years and from the most formative period of his influential life. This treasure is both timeless and timely.

—R. Albert Mohler Jr., President, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

[Kuyper] is my favorite devotional writer.

—Richard J. Mouw, President emeritus, Fuller Theological Seminary

Deeply rooted in Scripture, refracted through experiences both rare and commonplace, enlivened by Kuyper’s lively imagination, these meditations lead us along the confrontation between a most holy God and our various spiritual aspirations—from hope to doubt, trial to repentance, pride to joy.

—James D. Bratt, Professor of History emeritus, Calvin College

“Definitely blessed because God possesses him, God upholds him, and God wraps his soul in the bonds of his divine will. Those bonds tie him securely to Christ, the Son of his love. God is present in his Son and present in himself.” (Page 4)

“That man knows that it’s not he who possesses God, but God possesses him! He lives by and with that faith. That’s all he needs. He doesn’t desire more. Now the pit without water becomes God’s pit. God put him there. God is working in him there. God wants to lift him out of it, and he will.” (Pages 3–4)

“Would you ever have broken with the world if God had not first raged against the world in your own heart” (Page 11)

“The door of your sinful heart seemed like an everlasting door.” (Page 63)

“I exist because of the exalted God who has created me. When” (Page 49)

Abraham Kuyper

Abraham Kuyper (1837–1920) was the Prime Minister of the Netherlands between 1901 and 1905. He founded the Free University in Amsterdam and served as a professor of theology. At the invitation of B. B. Warfield, Kuyper traveled to the United States to deliver the Stone Lectures at Princeton and address Reformed congregations in Michigan and Iowa.

Kuyper studied at the University of Leiden, and received his doctorate there in 1863. He became a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1863, and consistently called for the separation of church and state. He also led a secession from the Dutch Reformed Church and united several disparate Reformed churches in the Netherlands.

Kuyper also led an active political life. He served as a member of Parliament in the Netherlands beginning in 1874 and served as prime minister from 1901–1905.

Abraham Kuyper was instrumental in the development of Neocalvinism, and is remembered for his articulation of common grace and for popularizing the notion of a Reformed worldview. He has influenced such notable figures as Francis Schaeffer, Cornelius Van Til, Alvin Plantinga, Nicholas Wolterstorff, and Chuck Colson.

Some of Kuyper’s publications, which are available in Logos, include Wisdom & Wonder: Common Grace in Science & Art, The Antithesis between Symbolism and Revelation, and Encyclopedia of Sacred Theology: Its Principles.
