Top Highlights

“According to the consensus of modern critical scholarship, the stories about Daniel and his friends are legendary in character, and the hero himself most probably never existed.” (Page 1)

“This is, in fact, the only generally accepted reference to resurrection in the Hebrew Bible” (Page 392)

“On the whole, the Qumran discoveries provide powerful evidence of the antiquity of the textual tradition of the MT” (Page 3)

“extends the duration of the desolation to seventy weeks of years, or ten jubilees” (Page 352)

“Nehemiah, who was cupbearer to a Persian king, was almost certainly a eunuch.” (Page 136)

The authors represent not only the best scholarship of our period but they also have the kind of interpretive energy and creativeness that will influence significantly the whole field of biblical studies and the study of religion in this country and elsewhere.

—Amos N. Wilder, The Divinity School, Harvard University, Emeritus
