Overview

The book of Deuteronomy is one of the most significant books in the Bible. Its content helped shape the theology of both the Old and New Testaments. In Book Study: Deuteronomy distinguished Old Testament scholar Dr. Daniel Block provides an in-depth look at look at this important book. Dr. Block walks through the text of what he calls “the Gospel according to Moses.” You’ll gain a better understanding of Deuteronomy and a fresh appreciation of how the book reveals the brilliance of God’s grace.

About the Instructor

Dr. Daniel Block, professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College, has been teaching God’s Word for more than 30 years.

It has been a special joy for Dr. Block to watch students, who often take introductory courses in Old Testament only because they are required to do so by the curriculum, suddenly awaken to the fact that the Old Testament is understandable and its message is both life-giving and relevant for modern, everyday life.

Dr. Block has published a number of books and essays in scholarly journals. The paradigm for his research and ministry is set by Ezra, as described in Ezra 7:10: he committed himself to the study the Torah of Yahweh, to put it into practice, and to teach his revealed will in Israel. This means constantly asking serious questions of the Scriptures: What does the text say? Why does the text say it like that? What did the text mean to the original audience? What does the text have to say to me today? In order to answer these questions, one needs to understand both the worlds out of which the biblical texts arose and the worlds in which modern people live.

I own seven commentaries by this author and I appreciate them very much. I also enjoyed this course, but there are some things I really don't understand. First of all, the frequent use of the term "gospel". What does "gospel" mean in this context? Surely not what euanghelion means in the NT. But then what? It seems to me that it has become an unjustified commonplace. As for the Decalogue: 1) The author speaks with total certainty about the two tablets as of two copies of the same document. I know there are few (rare) authors who speculate upon this. But Block upholds that with such a security that I don't understand where it comes from? Does he have pictures of the tablets? Furthermore, what is the point of making comparisons with treaties between rulers when in our case we are dealing with Yhwh? Did Yhwh place his copy at the feet of his god? 2) What has been said above is also pretty valid for the thesis that the decalogue is addressed to adult males, heads of families. And not for all the others? Can women kill, commit adultery and all the rest?

This course became a major driver in my sermon preparation for a series on the book. But, it also transformed my soul as I was inspired by the insights into my understanding of God and his plan for Israel and for us.

For me, Deuteronomy has always been a book of the Bible to read through quickly and feel sorry for the Israelites placed under the burden of the Law. O my! Dr. Brock has lifted my understanding so much higher. Deuteronomy is truly about the grace of God grace of God for the Church today. I loved Dr. Brock's passion, scholarly insight, humility to be strong on God's truth but careful to emphasize theory and supposition from fact. Of all the Mobile Ed courses I have taken, this is easily my favorite, possibly the most insightful and life-changing, and it has been so helpful to provide instructive hermeneutics by which to study other OT Scripture. Truly excellent and worth the investment.
