The Book of Psalms is known as the Bible’s songbook—Jesus knew all 150 psalms intimately, and relied on them to face every situation, including his death.
Two decades ago, Tim Keller began reading the entire Book of Psalms every month. The Songs of Jesus is based on his accumulated years of study, insight, and inspiration recorded in his prayer journals. Kathy Keller came to reading the psalms as a support during an extended illness. Together they have distilled the meaning of each verse, inviting readers into the vast wisdom of the psalms.
If you have no devotional life yet, this book is a wonderful way to start. If you already spend time in study and prayer, understanding every verse of the psalms will bring you a new level of intimacy with God, unlocking your purpose within God’s kingdom.
“As Elisabeth Elliot said, ‘The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances.’61” (Page 159)
“Lord, I confess there was a time in which the idea that my days were ‘ordained’ in ‘your book’ felt limiting to me. But as time goes by, and I can see how limited our wisdom is, my only hope becomes reliance on yours. I praise you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made!” (Page 350)
“So to be intimidated by the world (Psalm 2) is as spiritually fatal as being overly attracted to it (Psalm 1).” (Page 2)
“We must let our marriages reveal Christ, not replace Christ.” (Page 95)
“Here are two crucial biblical truths that must be held together—everything we do is part of God’s plan, yet we are never coerced and are completely responsible for our actions.” (Page 268)
Timothy Keller was born and raised in Pennsylvania, and educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. He was first a pastor in Hopewell, Virginia. In 1989 he started Redeemer Presbyterian Church, in New York City. Today, Redeemer has more than five thousand regular Sunday attendees and has helped to start over 250 new churches around the world. He has authored numerous bestsellers, including Every Good Endeavor, The Meaning of Marriage, Generous Justice, Counterfeit Gods, The Prodigal God, Jesus the King, and The Reason for God.
