Digital Logos Edition
Although the Recovering the Gospel Series does not represent an entirely systematic presentation of the gospel, it does address most of the essential elements, especially those that are most neglected in contemporary Christianity. It is the hope of the author that these words might be a guide to help you rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. It is his prayer that such a rediscovery might transform your life, strengthen your proclamation, and bring the greatest glory to God.
It should come as no surprise that misunderstandings about the gospel message and the nature of true conversion result in a problem with genuine assurance of salvation. A pseudo-gospel of “easy believism” has led many into careless presumption, and a poor understanding of salvation has abandoned tender consciences to near spiritual despair. In Gospel Assurance and Warnings, Paul Washer shines the light of gospel hope as he cautions against the dangers of making an empty profession of faith. Examining this question using 1 John, Washer carefully explains from Scripture the basis for establishing and maintaining a sound assurance of faith.
Just as I would want my children to know for certain they are mine, God wants his children to know that they are his. Washer has provided a great and thorough resource for those wanting to plumb the depths of the question ‘Am I really saved?’ and to teach it to others. This book is loaded with scriptural analysis and pastoral advice. It is a necessary book for the library of anyone entrusted with the care of souls.
—J.D. Greear, author, Stop Asking Jesus into Your Heart: How to Know for Sure You Are Saved
Paul Washer has given us a tremendously helpful tool to seek solid assurance that we are saved from sin by God’s grace. The Word of God is like a mirror for self-examination. The Epistle of First John particularly helps us examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith. Washer applies 1 John in a masterful way to this question, explaining a dozen marks of saving grace in the soul. At the same time, this book does not encourage us to rest on our past experiences but to press forward in spiritual growth in dependence upon the Spirit of Christ. Here is sweet help for God’s children struggling to enjoy assurance of their Father’s forgiveness and acceptance. And here is a sober warning to the self-deceived. May God use this book for His glory to the comfort of his people and the conversion of lost sinners.

The apostle Paul put the Gospel at the center of his preaching. He strove with all his might to proclaim it clearly, and even went so far as to pronounce a curse upon all those who would pervert its truth. Yet many, even among evangelicals, have reduced the Gospel message to a few trite statements to be memorized, repeated, and moved past. These individuals view conversion as a mere human decision. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer challenges such “easy believism,” searching for the real meaning of faith, repentance, and receiving Christ. He deals extensively with the effects of saving grace that God promises in the new covenant, as well as the creation of new hearts and new people.
In an age awash with easy believism, we need voices like Paul Washer’s that remind us of The Gospel Call and True Conversion. We are all tempted to believe that we are beyond the basics and in need of something more—something new. However, Washer reminds us that there is nothing more important and more relevant than getting the gospel right, making the gospel clear, and trusting that gospel to do its work of calling, saving, and securing a people to God and for God. Praise God for the gospel and books like this that help us know, understand, and love it more deeply.

Being a Christian is not just a matter of “making a decision for Jesus” or “turning over a new leaf.” It is a miracle of grace in which a sinner is brought by God’s power from death to life. In The Gospel Call and True Conversion, Paul Washer brilliantly and clearly helps the reader understand that truth, carefully opening the Scriptures and explaining how the power of the gospel ought to impact our lives as Christians. A much-needed, pastoral, and challenging book!
—Greg Gilbert, author, What Is the Gospel?
Paul Washer argues that one of the greatest crimes of contemporary Christianity is its neglect of the gospel. Absent from too many pulpits are the essential themes which make up the very core of the gospel—the justice of God, the radical depravity of man, and the atonement of Christ. In The Gospel’s Power and Message, Washer addresses these essential elements of Christ’s good news and provides a guide to help us rediscover the gospel in all its beauty, scandal, and saving power. Recovering the gospel can transform lives, strengthen proclamation, and bring glory to God.
In these days of insipid, man-centered, ear-tickling preaching, we need sons of thunder who fear God and faithfully preach his word without fear of consequences. My friend, Paul Washer, is one such man. May God use this book to reach the lost and to glorify his name.
—Ray Comfort, author, The Way of the Master
This book is a thoughtful, poignant reminder that the message Christ commissioned us to proclaim is neither spongy nor trivial. Nor can it be improved by human revision. The gospel may be a stumbling block to some and seem like foolishness to others—but to those who are called, it is the power and the wisdom of God.
—Phil Johnson, executive director, Grace to You
I am profoundly thankful for the courageous clarity of The Gospel’s Power and Message by Paul Washer. . . . [He] strikes all the right notes in this powerful, biblical study.
—John MacArthur, pastor-teacher, Grace Community Church, Sun Valley, CA
In this outstanding volume Paul Washer masterfully opens up from the Bible the heart of the gospel, giving us an invaluable resource for our lives. This book is a wonderful gift to the church and like no other that I have seen on this subject. It should be read by every Christian but especially those who labor in the ministry, for it will greatly assist them in being faithful proclaimers of God’s good news message to a lost and fallen world.
