Prompted and guided by the Holy Spirit, the prayers that come forth from our hearts express our needs, feelings, and struggles as closely as our mind can express them. But there are seasons when the words won’t form, and even those accustomed to praying freely will pray the Psalms or other written prayers to express the ineffable wants of the soul. The Lutheran Prayer Book provides precisely such prayers, suitable for hundreds of different occasions or seasons of life. In addition, prayers for children and hymns for the family are included, as well as recommendations for incorporating these prayers, hymns, and other devotional writings into your daily devotional practices.
“Thou hast made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (Page 140)
“Holy Spirit, breathe a spirit of prayer on our families, our churches, and our nation! May the Holy Ghost teach us to pray with the understanding, the heart, and with fervor! Then shall we pray acceptably and effectually, both for ourselves and for others.” (Page 25)
“mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength, and our Redeemer. Amen.” (Page 106)
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you!’ Matt. 6:33” (Page 26)
“Impress us with the lapse of time, and so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom” (Page 187)
