Jesus’ followers had expected him to overthrow their oppressors. Roman officials tried to avoid ordering his crucifixion. When he died, the midday sun became dark for three hours and a huge curtain in the Jewish temple was torn in two. His body disappeared from his tomb, and then he appeared to his disciples.
