From the Preface: As never before since the sixteenth century, religious people are concerned with the question of the church. In recent years the great conferences on Life and Work, and Faith and Order, held in Stockholm, Geneva, Oxford, and Edinburgh, have stirred the Protestant world to its depths. Volume after volume written by the foremost theological scholars and church leaders of the age have gone out in various languages to the farthest limits of civilization, bringing this moving subject of the church, its unity, its message and its work, into the remotest hamlets and the humblest homes of evangelical Christendom everywhere. I am happy to have the privilege of making a timely, even if limited, contribution to this epoch-making discussion.—Charles Ewing Brown
