Flattery. James E. Richardson, Ph.D. is the general editor. Topics such as speaking in tongues, spiritual gifts, church growth, world missions, building the body of Christ, the future of Pentecost in this century, and others are treated by these scholars. The authors who contributed to this volume are well known as scholars and leaders. The first three volumes in this set were written by Dr. Flattery. A series introduction by Flattery is included in this fourth volume. Volume one has to do with the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. The second volume deals with Luke’s presentation of the presence and work of the Spirit. The third volume presents the writings of John and Paul concerning the Holy Spirit.
Spiritual Persons, Gifts, and Churches is a commentary on 1 Corinthians 12-14 by Dr. George M. Flattery. He maintains that Paul’s major concerns are that the believers will be truly spiritual people, that they will properly exercise spiritual gifts, and that the local churches will be spiritual. All of this, Paul declares, should exalt Jesus Christ as Lord and be motivated by love for God and each other. A renewed application of what Paul says will result in spiritually healthy people and churches. According to Dr. Flattery, Paul proclaims that truly spiritual people do not exercise spiritual gifts without love. Neither do they claim to be motivated by love without the use of the gifts. Spiritual people, acting in love, minister to others with the spiritual gifts and thereby edify the body of Christ. The loving manifestation of the Spirit is the hallmark of spiritual churches.
“The Holy Spirit in the New Testament: John and Paul” is the third volume in a four-volume set. This volume consists of a study of the Scriptures in the writings of John and Paul that refer to the Holy Spirit. John deals with many themes, but his special emphases are the work of the Spirit in bestowing and sustaining new life and the Spirit leading into all truth. Paul is the most comprehensive of the authors. When a person believes in Christ, he or she is united with Christ and receives the Spirit. From that point on, the believer is blessed with a strong experiential relationship with God through the Spirit. Paul deals with the work of the Spirit in new life, maturity, ministry, and worship. These themes are often expressed throughout his letters. Volume one has to do with the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. The second volume deals with Luke’s presentation of the presence and work of the Spirit in Luke and Acts. The fourth volume, written by a group of scholars, is a study of contemporary issues in pneumatology. Taken together, this set provides a comprehensive study of virtually all of the Scriptures in the Bible that name the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit in the New Testament: Luke and Acts is the second volume in a four-volume set. This volume consists of a study of the Scriptures in Luke and Acts that refer to the Holy Spirit. Christ is central to the story of the Spirit. The empowering Spirit is poured out upon those who believe in Christ. The special, but not the only, emphasis of Luke is on the enabling of the Spirit to speak prophetically and to witness. Jesus Christ has commissioned all believers to have a part in worldwide witness. The outpoured Spirit empowers believers to be witnesses throughout the earth. Volume one of this set has to do with the Old Testament references to the Holy Spirit. The third volume studies the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures written by John and Paul. The fourth volume is a study of contemporary issues in pneumatology. Taken together, this four-volume set provides a comprehensive study of virtually all of the Scriptures in the Bible that name the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit in the Old Testament is volume one of a four-volume set entitled “A Biblical Theology of the Holy Spirit.” This volume consists of a study of the Scriptures in the Old Testament that refer to the Holy Spirit. Various dimensions of the Holy Spirit’s presence and work, such as empowerment and spiritual life, are included in this study. Also included is work of the Spirit in lives of leaders, prophets, and the people. Many authors dwell on the differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament. According to Flattery, there are differences, but there are many points of similarity as well. Both the differences and similarities provide the background for the presence and work of the Spirit in the New Testament.Volume two of this set has to do with the Holy Spirit in writings of Luke, including the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. The third volume studies the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures written by John and Paul. Flattery deals with the special emphases of each of the writers. These emphases include new life, maturity, ministry, and worship. The fourth volume is a study of contemporary issues in pneumatology. Taken together, this set provides a comprehensive study of virtually all of the Scriptures in the Bible that name the Holy Spirit.
Dr. George M. Flattery’s inductive study of God’s Word reveals how we can live a systematic theology of the Holy Spirit in a multidimensional, vibrant relationship. He believes that a view of the Holy Spirit must be in context to the entirety of God’s Word and that it will reveal the fullness of the Person and role of the Holy Spirit. God’s Word reveals to us ten core issues about the Holy Spirit that we must understand so that we can fulfill Christ’s command for global evangelism and make our spiritual journey the best that it can be.
Dr. Flattery bases this book on Matthew 20:20-28 which tells the story of Jesus interacting with the disciples about greatness and leadership. He points out that this story brings into focus several major leadership issues. In Jesus’ teaching on the central issue, He drew a sharp contrast between rulers that stress authority and leaders that emphasize service. Many servant leaders have authority, but they make service paramount. According to Dr. Flattery, the overarching message of Matthew’s story is that service is the indispensable element in great leadership. While making this point, Jesus addressed His remarks to whoever would be great. Paradoxically, the one who wants to be great must be the servant of all. Similarly, the paradox of leadership is that leaders become great through service. Jesus does not rebuke the desire to be great, but He shows the way. Service rather than authority has the priority.
