The Catholic, or General, Letters of the New Testament are made up of the books of James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude. They are called Catholic or General because of the more universal character and audience of each letter. They were not written to a specific community in a specific geographic location, but speak in a more general way to the broader Christian community. This makes them valuable for understanding the elements and ideas of the early Church that would have been common to most if not all of the churches.
