“A believing community—focused on the gospel, praising God, praying, and gladly putting the needs of others first—experiences, and shows to the world, the reality of heaven here and now. Luke leaves us a model not for how to ‘do’ church but for what the people of God should look like in terms of priorities, actions, service, and practice.” (Page 363)
“He tells them that they do not or cannot know the time in familiar terms; only the Father knows the exact time. He redirects their question to the more important issue that focuses the disciples on a different idea of time. The disciples are thinking in regard to the consummation, the final establishment of the kingdom. They are also likely thinking of a decisive event. But Jesus directs them away from a specific day and instead focuses on the situation that exists as a result of his resurrection. The kingdom is being restored and will continue to be restored through the coming of the promised Holy Spirit, who will empower the disciples. The restoration begins now.” (Page 337)
“This OT background informs what Jesus says in John 15. When Jesus declares himself to be the ‘true vine’ in verse 1, he identifies himself as the true Israel. By adopting this imagery and applying it to himself, Jesus declares that one’s standing in the people of God depends no longer on genealogical descent from Abraham but on one’s vital connection to himself. To be part of the vine, one must be connected to Jesus. Whereas the Father formerly tended ethnic Israel as his vine, he now tends those who are united to Christ by faith.” (Page 239)
