A boy doesn't become a man by accident. The truth is, it takes a special kind of father (or father-figure) to teach his son the practical wisdom he needs to build the mindset of a real man. In his book, Manhood Is a Mindset, pastor and father J. Colin Trisler points his son to the example of Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, and instructs him in the fatherly wisdom Solomon taught his son in Proverbs 1-9. His book is a text-driven exposition that follows Solomon's lead and reads as a personalized discourse--as a series of letters from a father to his son. Trisler wrote these letters to instruct his son in the wisdom he needs to grow into a man who is prepared to go out into the real world and earn a good life for himself. He published these letters to support all those other fathers who are working just as hard to mold their inexperienced boys into strong and capable men who are prepared to meet their responsibilities to God, their families, their neighbors, and themselves.
“How do you teach your son God’s wisdom, intentionally? This
book is the answer. I cannot speak highly enough about Manhood
Is a Mindset. It follows the approach of the wisest man who
ever lived, taking a young man through the foundational principles
of Solomon’s wisdom and making them real to him. I plan to use the
book with my own son. There is no other resource like it.”
—Cody Libolt, Co-Founder, For the New Christian Intellectual
“Colin Trisler has provided a valuable resource for family
ministry. In Manhood Is a Mindset, Trisler highlights the
importance of mentoring in the father-son relationship. His
conversational approach is perfect for encouraging and equipping
dads for their most important mission in life.”
—Chris Shirley, Professor of Educational Ministries, Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary
“What is manhood at its finest? In Manhood Is a Mindset,
after wide research and deep meditations, J. Colin Trisler answers
the question in ten letters to his son, and Solomon’s ancient
wisdom ascends in modern style. Brace yourself and hear the
startling voice of God. Recommended!”
—D. Scott Meadows, Pastor, Calvary Baptist Church (Reformed),
Exeter, New Hampshire
“Amid the shifting sands of our world’s ideas about morality and
manhood, J. Colin Trisler has provided solid ground for fathers to
stand on as they endeavor to raise their sons to be great men.
Using an engaging writing style full of pop culture references and
modern illustrations, he expounds on the ancient wisdom of the book
of Proverbs with clarity and logical precision.”
—Billy Ford, Lead Pastor, Bouquet Canyon Church, Santa Clarita,
California
“Every good father knows the importance of instructing their
children but cannot teach what they do not know. Manhood Is a
Mindset is a thorough, well-considered work on wisdom for
fathers who have been raised in an age of folly. Fathers, Trisler’s
book is a tool that can help you build wise men out of the boys
sacredly entrusted to you by the Lord.”
—Matthew L. Nowlin, Director, Conservative Christians of
Tennessee
“I highly recommend Manhood Is a Mindset. It is a book that
I wish I could have read when I was a teenaged boy and when I was
raising my own son. J. Colin Trisler has written a book that will
hook young readers with pop culture references while it teaches and
inspires them from God’s wisdom in Proverbs. I will heartily share
it with the boys that I work with.”
—Kyle Ambrose, Principal of Longview Christian School, Longview,
Texas
“Trisler’s Manhood Is a Mindset is an engaging work relaying
truths for young men to help them navigate life’s often grey areas
without resorting to the maudlin or milquetoast tone of much of
current literature. The message proved beneficial, notably his
warnings of the perils found with worthless men and forbidden
women. I recommend this book to any father, no matter their son’s
age, and even just for their own edification and
application.”
—Cameron Brown, teacher, writer, and father of two sons
“In preparation for fatherhood, Colin Trisler’s book fuels my
motivation. He is skilled in demonstrating that the mental aspects
of manhood are practical for daily life. Also, it is with certainty
that I would introduce my son to the lady mentioned in letter
number four. In all of the letters, wisdom is not just a lofty
concept; instead, it is about the nuts and bolts of living as a
good man.”
—Anthony Ramos Peterson, teacher, Chicago, Illinois
“Trisler has written a book that is much more than an enjoyable
read or interesting subject. It is a practical tool that gives
priceless advice for both young men and fathers navigating true and
biblical manhood. The decision to write the book in the context of
letters to his son proved to be a valuable roadmap for
understanding how we should really be speaking and thinking about
manhood and masculinity in our current society. The book is
refreshing and unique in its approach in a way that feels closest
to the actual truth about a subject that has been horribly
misconstrued in today’s world. What Trisler has written will
actually help Christian men understand manhood more than almost any
other book on the subject, because it is spoken on the basis of
‘truth’ and ‘reality’ as its core for the foundation of what is
required of men. I could simply not agree more with Trisler, and I
am thankful for the blueprint it has given me as a father to my own
son.”
—Justin Wilson, Founder, Studium Sapientiae
“By walking through the wisdom found in Proverbs, Trisler pulls
out, with great clarity, valuable biblical truths that not only our
sons need but the fathers teaching them as well. As Trisler
mentions early on, manhood is not merely a ‘random acquisition’ but
a mindset to be learned. Manhood Is a Mindset is a great
resource for the church and I warmly recommend this book to fathers
and sons everywhere.”
—Scott Hutson, Ratio Christi Chapter Director, Dallas Baptist
University
“Manhood Is A Mindset strikes to the heart, from the
introduction and throughout each practical example of truth riveted
in biblical and life examples. God’s word reaches into every aspect
of humanity in the psychology of the Psalms, yet Colin Trisler
brings the life principles of wisdom into the lives of sons via
Proverbs. As Sam Adams, the last Puritan, constantly wrote, our
youth should be inculcated in ‘piety, religion and morality.’
Manhood Is A Mindset is a superb guide for dads to develop
godly men.”
—Tom Niewulis, author and founder of

“Colin Trisler offers a tender yet strong look at biblical manhood
in the form of these letters to his son. Well-read and wise, every
dad should read this book. I was challenged and encouraged as I
seek to raise my own two boys into men.”
—Jesse Van Der Molen, high school English teacher
“This book is a short book that, if you are a father, you can read
with your son and discuss along the way. I hope sons will get a lot
out of such a book, but I hope even more that fathers will. If we
have a problem with masculinity in this country, it is because of a
problem going back to fathers in the world today. The advice is
timeless and yet written for such a time as this. I heartily
recommend it. Prepare to be blessed by what you are about to read,
and may we all be the men this world needs together.”
—Nick Peters, Christian, husband, apologist, aspie, and gamer
“Mining ancient wisdom, affirming it as divine truth, and framing
it creatively with contemporary, easy-to-understand illustrations,
pastor J. Colin Trisler draws on the initial chapters of Proverbs
to convey to his son—and to all fathers and sons—what manhood is
from a biblical perspective. The high adventure of godly manhood is
richly rewarding. It is fulfilling and exhilarating as is nothing
else to a man; yet it also is challenging and demanding. With God’s
help and with his father’s guidance, every boy can achieve biblical
manhood. Here is a great place for both fathers and sons to
begin!”
