“Without a doubt, W. A. Criswell, longtime pastor of First Baptist Church, Dallas, was the ideological godfather of the conservative movement. Although he himself was not instrumental in the decision-making process of building the conservative coalition that would eventually change the Southern Baptist Convention, Criswell provided several things that were essential for the movement’s success. First and foremost, Criswell, who was himself a scholar and an academician as well as a preacher and a pastor, proved to be the paramount role model of what the conservatives desired in a pastor.” (Page 65)

“What was most significant about ‘A Message to Southern Baptists’ was that it was written fifteen years before the inception of the Conservative Resurgence in the Southern Baptist Convention. Obviously, the problem in the Convention and Paul Pressler’s concern spanned not just months or a few years but literally decades.” (Page 71)

“The previous correspondence demonstrates two things: First, Pressler had great concern over the theological soundness of our seminaries at least twenty years prior to the beginning of the ‘controversy’ in the Convention. Second, it demonstrates very clearly that he attempted to work within the system to redress the issues that had been raised, primarily, from the Elliott Controversy, but secondarily, from feedback concerning other institutions that he researched as he prepared his booklet and report to the deacons of Second Baptist Church.” (Page 74)

“The 1979 Southern Baptist Convention assembled in Houston, Texas, for its 122nd session. Because of the presence of the conservative voting block, the Houston Convention proved to be one of the most significant Southern Baptist gatherings in history. In fact, the Southern Baptist Convention would never, ever again be the same.” (Page 91)
