Overview

The World and the Word is a fresh introduction to the Old Testament driven largely by the fact that so much Christian preaching and teaching today increasingly ignores what is eighty percent of the Bible. Authors Eugene Merrill, Mark Rooker, and Michael Grisanti work through the world and text of the Old Testament always making three major points:

  • The Old Testament is a rich source of theology and doctrine that is presupposed by the New Testament. Without it, Christian theology would be seriously deficient.
  • Mastery of the Old Testament is crucial to an understanding of the New Testament.
  • The Old Testament offers, by teaching and example, practical principles of belief and behavior for contemporary times. Who God was and what He did then can be replicated in the lives of men and women today.

Separating the verifiable biblical and extra-biblical data from the various interpretations of that same information, the book further shows how the Old Testament forms the platform and matrix from which sprang the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus and the church. The World and the Word will help students see an entry point into the very heart and design of God who loves them and wishes to make them the special object of His grace.

  • Explores the theology and doctrine of the Old Testament
  • Shows how the Old Testament forms the platform and matrix from which sprang the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus and the church
  • Examines the connection to the understanding of the New Testament

Top Highlights

“Third, the OT offers, by teaching and example, practical principles of belief and behavior for contemporary times.” (Page 11)

“The time frame within which the OT narrative occurs is thus from 3000 to 400 BC.” (Page 18)

“Viewed from this perspective it seems clear that the intention of the book of Samuel is to show the why and how of the transition from a period in which ‘everyone did whatever he wanted’ (Judg 21:25) to one in which God’s kingdom rule was entrusted to one man who was ‘after [God’s] own heart’ (1 Sam 13:14 NIV).” (Page 317)

“The present work incidentally addresses most of the traditional topics associated with the genre, but it also consciously attempts to meet three additional particular concerns: (1) the neglect of the OT in contemporary life, even in the life of the church; (2) the importance of the OT as a revelation of God with abiding relevance to the modern world; and (3) difficulties in or with the OT that frequently exacerbate these other two problems.” (Page 4)

“The biblical chronology locates Abraham in Egypt during this period, probably in Dynasty 10, so the story of his ambivalent reception by the pharaoh takes on new light in view of the times (Gen 12:10–20).” (Page 20)

This is a great OT introduction. Its conservative approach is comincing in the various OT issues. I think it's rather short in some sections, but in general is plenty of valuable information.

This is a great resource. I got the chance to get a copy in seminary and still use it today. The authors give great information and write from a conservative perspective. Recommended!
