The CBL Series Available Online

The Complete Biblical Library was a remarkably ambitious undertaking involving over 500 Bible scholars and researchers. It took over 20 years to produce this exhaustive reference set unlike any other. The result was a 39-volume library detailing the entire Bible, blending all study tools into one resource.

What makes the Complete Biblical Library such a sought-after work?

The CBL’s unique interface of fresh, precision study tools makes it ideal for the Bible scholar and the serious student. This Old and New Testament bundle is a 39-volume set containing an Old and New Testament study Bible, a Hebrew–English dictionary, a Greek–English dictionary, a Various Versions volume, a harmony of the Gospels, and a Greek grammar. Old and New Testament sets can be purchased separately.

Such a combination of biblical and theological material has not been produced in any previous work. The Complete Biblical Library is special because it employs a system which is usable by those who have little or no knowledge of Hebrew or Greek, yet will appeal to theologians at the highest level of scholarship. For all who use this work, it will open wider the door to the riches of the original text of the Old and New Testaments.

Digital Old and New Testament Study Bibles

The Study Bible volumes contain an encyclopedic survey of the particular Old or New Testament book being treated. Each survey provides a general outline, discusses matters which may have several opinions, and provides background information regarding the history, culture, literature, and philosophy of the era covered by the book.

Following the overview is a unique interlinear containing the Hebrew or Greek text, the grammatical forms, the transliteration, the translation, and the word’s assigned number that is useful for cross-reference study within all volumes of the Complete Biblical Library. Various sources for the Hebrew text are listed within the study Bible volumes. The New Testament study Bible employs a textual apparatus to compare the many different Greek texts and their variants.

A verse-by-verse commentary that is useful for a basic understanding of every Old and New Testament verse is then included. Finally, nearly 30 various Bible translations are interspersed throughout the Old Testament text, and nearly 100 various Bible translations are interspersed throughout the New Testament text, in addition to the complete King James Version text, to show how different phrases have been translated over the years.

Digital Hebrew and Greek Dictionaries

The Hebrew–English dictionary and the Greek–English dictionary volumes are fitting companions to the study Bible volumes. The volumes are closely linked by a numerical system which identifies each Hebrew and Greek word. The number is placed above the word in the interlinear and is repeated in the dictionary, which lists the words in alphabetical order. By this system a person may easily go from the study Bible to an in-depth study in the dictionary. Such an arrangement makes these dictionaries as usable for the layman as for the scholar. Features of the Hebrew–English dictionary and the Greek–English dictionary include:

  • Hebrew words of the Old Testament
  • Greek words of the New Testament
  • Cognate and synonym research
  • Septuagint
  • Grammatical forms
  • Hebrew–English concordance
  • Greek–English concordance
  • Word studies
  • Resource tools

Harmony of the Gospels

This harmony is different from any other. Robert Shank (author) is noted for his accurate juxtaposition of the four Gospels, story by story, from the birth of Christ through his ascension. All four Gospels (in KJV) are laid side by side in parallel columns. What makes this harmony unique is the fifth column, known as a diatessaron. This interweaves all four Gospels into a single narrative, in modern English. Every verse of all four Gospels is accounted for, but no verse is repeated.

Greek Grammar

You’ll also find a handy Greek grammar volume that can literally teach anyone New Testament Greek. It starts with the foundation of the English grammar you are already familiar with and builds on that basis. Users have remarked that it’s like getting two semesters of New Testament Greek!

The Word studies portion of the dictionary is the real heart of the CBL dictionary. Most lexicons offer word studies on “key” words. CBL gives you a word study on every Hebrew and Greek word.

Hebrew Word Studies

Every Hebrew word study follows the same format:

  • Explanation of how the word was used in Hebrew through the period of the Old Testament’s authorship. The discussion includes Hebrew poetry, historical accounts, inscriptions, related languages, etc. This provides a good basis for understanding the word’s significance in the Old Testament.
  • Cognates (related words coming from the same stem). Word studies will sometimes list cognates of other Semitic languages. Cognates in these related tongues often help clarify Hebrew words, especially those which occur infrequently.
  • Number of times the word appears in the Old Testament. This number may not coincide with the number of occurrences in the concordance, because there is sometimes disagreement as to the root form of the word.
  • Each word study also references Strong's numbers and also gives you the volume and page number where this word can be accessed in the New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew and English Lexicon, the Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament, the Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament, and the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament. (Hot links are applied to words that can be found in Wordsearch versions of these tools.)

Greek Word Studies

Every Greek word study follows this three step outline:

  1. Classical Greek. CBL tells you how this word was used in classical Greek literature. If a Greek word was used only once or twice in the NT, it will shed new light on the word to see how, for instance, Homer used the same word in the Iliad.
  2. Septuagint. The Septuagint is the Greek translation of the OT. Understanding how ancient Hebrew scholars used rare words will give you deeper insight into the particular word or phrase you are studying.
  3. New Testament. Finally, each word study takes you on a tour of that word’s usage throughout the different books of the NT. Furthermore, each word study also links you to Strong’s numbers as well as references you to the volume and page number where this word can be accessed in TDNTColin BrownBDAGLSJ, and Moulton Milligan.
One of the greatest tools for the serious Bible student to come along in my lifetime is The Complete Biblical Library. It has it all: the original Greek, interlinear, King James Version, practical commentary, and references that make Bible study come to life.

—Dr. Tim LaHaye, Author, Minister, Educator

One of the most comprehensive and ambitious editions of the New Testament ever conceived in modern times. I feel I can recommend this set without reservation.

—Dr. Gleason L. Archer, Former Professor Trinity Evangelical Divinity School

The Complete Biblical Library is a marvelous example of a thorough Bible study program, introducing the reader to the Bible in its entirety. While one may not agree with every interpretation, the hours of godly scholastic commitment that have gone into this resource work are remarkable indeed.

—Dr. W.A. Criswell, Former Pastor First Baptist Church, Dallas, Texas

It is a good one, but I am always suspicous when a book or a series says they are "complete."

These are the book review comments for the series from Craig Blomberg at TGC: "The series, which seems heavily Scandinavian in origin, and Pentecostal in contributorship, has only a handful of bonafide New Testament scholars as writers. All articles are unsigned. The Greek text is not the Nestle-Aland but a modified Textus Receptus (Stephanus plus variants). The major English text is the av. The comments on Galatians through Philemon, while consistently conservative, break no new ground and assiduously avoid taking stands or exploring in any detail all of the most interesting or controversial exegetical issues. The idea of one series which will do it all is admirable, but this series will not do it, though its high-tech presentation will make it attractive to many, and it does collect together an impressive wealth of material into one place." I think there are some other commentary series that do a fairer job on some up-to-date issues among evangelical biblical topics than this series.

I bought this only based on the video detailing how it interlinks. When I went to follow the video above got my layout up ok but nothing worked. No initial search results, except the bible reference I typed in, screen data was different on other sections shown. The interlinear, was nothing like the video, all it has is the biblical verse and a line of numbers, you don't know what number relates to what word, until you start to move your mouse over. If your going to advertise a product at least have a video that is correct. Would I recommend this, no. Really considering a refund.

FIRST, this resource has the potential to be 5 Stars+. LOGOS inherited it from WORDsearch Bible (where I obtained it), but in the transfer to LOGOS it picked up some substantial bugs & limitations. I have reported those, but in the last response I received (May 2023) I was only told "if/when" they are corrected, etc... There's so much potential, it's a shame... SPECIFICALLY: Maybe a year ago (?) I reported that The Complete Biblical Library Old Testament Interlinear (CBL OT) does not always link the corresponding number to The Complete Biblical Library: The Old Testament Hebrew-English Dictionary. At that time, LOGOS verified and confirmed the "bug". The problem still persists, so I am wondering if/when it might be corrected? As an example, in GENESIS 1:1 -- the very first (compound) word has two numbers: "904" and "7519" -- but the second number is not linked to its definition; instead, it points to the same definition as the first number (#904)). This problem, limitation exists throughout the Old Testament. Help? THE REPLY: "I've linkd the case I made with Content Production to the case created with customer service via your email to us. We'll try to update you if/when we are able to resolve the problem."

Great resource! On a negative side, you can do everything you can do on the CBL and much more with Logos. Also you’re limited on the commentary side, if you were to work with CBL only. On the positive side, if you set up a custom layout you can add other stuff. Include a custom guide that has the CBL interlinear opened, your preferred Bible, the various versions volume, and commentary. The CBL interlinear is useful because it gives you instant access to the Hebrew and Greek dictionaries. Those are very thorough and contain links to other lexicons within the Logos ecosystem. So if you own several lexicons the CBL lexicon will come in very handy! Overall, custom layout or not, if you prioritize the CBL, it will yield outstanding results along with the rest of your Logos library.

Best resource ever. I use it all the time. Everything you need is all in one place. Scholarship is top notch. I especially love the Hebrew & Greek Dictionaries. I came to Logos from WordSearch so while Logos has similar tools, I was already familiar with this set from WordSearch.

The "various versions" offering, just compares what different translations say about each verse of the Bible. You can do the same thing with the Logos text comparison tool. Then the set offers an interlinear Bible, which is already available in logos, in many packages, and you probably already own one. The same is true for the dictionary portion of this set. Then it offers a textual apparatus, which I already own a different version of, and a "bundle", which is simply a single commentary for every book in the Bible. The only thing unique to this set, which I do not already own multiple versions of, is the commentary. Reading through some of the commentary portion of this set, my response is "meh". It's okay. I'm not convinced to spend $750 for this bundle, since the only unique thing it's offering me is a commentary that seems kind of average.
