Struggle--of both the small and staggering sort--is woven throughout all our lives. It can erode our faith, strip us of hope, rob us of joy, extinguish our vitality, and diminish our capacity to love. But because God is always present and at work, seeds of redemption lie as hidden treasure buried in the ground of struggle. By taking a deeply human look at various figures in the lineage of Jesus in Matthew 1, Andy White shows us that the people we once may have considered unlike us because of thousands of years of separation suddenly come close in their pain, loss, and failures. He, too, comes close as a man who has faced hardships, to offer others a hand when their feet are unsteady. By digging into the lives of these biblical sojourners, White unearths hidden treasures, guides readers on a journey of self-discovery, and points the way forward, showing us ways to cultivate tenacious hope, stronger faith, and greater capacity to live and love as participants in God’s ongoing redemption story.
“Written from the real-life trenches of trials, White offers a
genuine word of hope. The book combines meaty biblical substance,
transparent narrative, and rich theology to provide a comforting
word for those in the valley of darkness. In addition to the
pastoral tone of the book, White takes a unique and intriguing
journey through parts of the genealogy of Jesus.”
—Cameron Cole, author of Therefore I Have Hope: 12 Truths That
Comfort, Sustain, and Redeem
“Andy White expresses a powerful truth about the
Christian faith. He gleans from examples in Matthew’s genealogy of
Jesus and from his own ‘spiritual genealogy’ that faith is not just
a set of beliefs and practices. Faith is the way to live a certain
kind of story, journey, and pilgrimage toward a future not known
with certainty but, nonetheless, constructed by God and one
traveled by Christ himself. Consequently, regardless of the
setbacks, losses, and shocks that occur, our faith-story is never
over.”

"Seeds of Redemption is a gentle and serious reminder of how
our life path may go through a valley of death and darkness, yet
God never seems to give up on us. Though we sometimes look to be
struggling alone, God is near and brings the victory to us for his
glory. Andy White opens our eyes to see that Jesus’s followers seem
to go through persistent trials and hardships, but that these
situations can build character and bring out a new creation with
new passion and zeal for faith in God, thus radiating his glory and
beauty."
—Samuel M. Mugisha, bishop, Anglican Diocese of Shyira, Musanze,
Rwanda
“With references to literary classics, movies, and diverse
spiritual writers, Andy White uses examples from the genealogy of
Jesus to meet us in the midst of life’s heartache and pain and to
remind us that grace not only redeems our brokenness, but it equips
us to be agents of that grace to others in a world desperately in
need of redemption. A must-read for both the hurting and the
hopeful!”
—Kristy Dempsey, award-winning children’s book author
"Andy White’s book is not just another treatise about broken
humanity and suffering. Linking specific biblical characters and
their narratives with current, commonly experienced human
conditions, Andy explains how setbacks, loss, betrayal, failures,
and plain old sin are part of Jesus’ redemptive story—his story—in
our lives today. Poignant human anecdotes, insightful quotes,
fascinating film analogies, and scholarly textual perspectives help
the reader better understand the meaning-making process of Jesus’s
love during our toughest times. In the end, our pain is always
about Jesus, and Andy faithfully honors that reality."
