The LSB Translation: An Emphasis on Original Meaning

The Lockman Foundation partnered with John MacArthur, Dr. Abner Chou from Master's University, and many other scholars. They created an updated translation based on the New American Standard Bible of 1995 (NASB95). This new translation is the Legacy Standard Bible.

The LSB is a literal, formal-equivalent Bible translation – designed to be the new standard for future generations of pastors and congregations. For more information on the original language texts used for their translation, refer to the LSB's Frequently Asked Questions on their website.

  • Translates individual words as consistently as possible
  • Brings out textual connections through consistent translation of words
  • Equips generations to study Scripture and continue the philosophy of being a window into the original text

One noticeable distinction with the LSB translation is in using the name Yahweh instead of LORD. The translators themselves have provided an explanation for this particular nuance: Why the Legacy Standard Bible Translates "Yahweh" in the Old Testament.

John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church and known for the Christian radio and television program Grace to You, watched as Bible translation trends shifted toward the reader and "away from the Author." For MacArthur, this shift would potentially draw readers further away from the original intent of Scripture.

The Legacy Standard Bible (LSB) translation team set to work. MacArthur, along with Master's University President Abner Chou, brought together scholars from Master's Seminary skilled in Greek and Hebrew for the translation work.

Rather than assigning scholars individual sections, the team worked collectively on the entire Bible. A global team then tested the readability of the text with scholars, pastors, and everyday NASB readers from around the world. The hope is that no matter a person's age or walk of life, they will be able to engage and interact with the text with ease.

The result is a more modern translation of the NASB '95 that maintains its readability and is accurate to the original languages.

To better understand this translation, compare Psalm 62:9–10 from other popular translations. If you'd like to know more about the differences and history of popular Bible translations, take a look at The Best Bible Translations: All You Need to Know & How to Choose.

Psalm 62:9–10 (KJV)
Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity. Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

Psalm 62:9–10 (NIV)
Surely the lowborn are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie. If weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. Do not trust in extortion or put vain hope in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

Psalm 62:9–10 (ESV)
Those of low estate are but a breath; those of high estate are a delusion;in the balances they go up; they are together lighter than a breath. Put no trust in extortion; set no vain hopes on robbery; if riches increase, set not your heart on them.

Psalm 62:9–10 (LSB)
Surely men of low degree are merely vanity and men of rank are a lie; in the balances they go up; They are together lighter than a breath of vanity. Do not trust in oppression and do not put vain hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.

This has become my favorite CT translation of the Bible. I'm an NKJV guy but the LSB is right there with it.

Became my favorite translation of all! It is excellent! A paragraph layout in addition to verse by verse would be appreciated.
