Overview

This volume contains a selection of Luther’s preaching on the first two books of the Bible roughly within the years 1523-25. Luther preached during these years in the context the controversies sparked by Andreas Bodenstein von Karlstadt, Thomas Münzer, and the Peasants’ War. The question of the day was how contemporary Christians ought to respond to Moses’ Law. Where his opponents claimed the laws still bound Christians in some areas like images in worship or ceremonial law, Luther aimed to clarify the role of the Law of Moses for Christians. He returnes frequently to theological themes from the early years of his public career and to autobiographical reflection, working to convey the significance of the conservative Reformation to a zealous new generation asking new questions about their relation to the Old Testament.

This volume includes original English translations of the following works by Luther:

Sermon and Introduction to Genesis (1523)

Dr. Martin Luther’s Exposition of Several Chapters of the Second Book of Moses [Exodus 1-18] (1524-25/1563)

Sermons on Exodus 19-20 (1525/1528)

Luther’s Preface to Volume 1 of Lectures on Genesis (1544)

Martin Luther

Martin Luther (1483–1546), one of the most significant figures in Western history, was a key figure in the Protestant Reformation. Over the course of his life, Luther was a monk, a priest, a professor of biblical literature, a Reformer, a husband, and a father.

Luther is most noted for his Ninety-Five Theses (1517), in which he argued that indulgences were not acts of penance which could replace true repentance. His refusal to retract all his writings, demanded by Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521, resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the emperor.

Luther has been both praised and vilified for what he preached and wrote. Luther’s translation of the Christian Bible into the vernacular greatly influenced the church. His works continue to impact all Christians and animate the movement that bears his name. Luther’s Works (55 vols.) contains many of Luther’s writings, including commentaries, sermons, and lectures.

Luther had seperated exegesis and allegory during his late years around 1520s, that is, he interpreted and texts from history, literature and theology first, then do the allegory as application. This progress really helps a preacher to deal with the bible texts appropriately.
