So you think you know about King David? The question is: Which David? The David of Sunday school--shepherd boy, killer of Goliath, and plucker of harp? But what about the brigand, murderer, rapist, adulterer, poet, and king? David was all these things. Yet his real story has lain quite undisturbed in the Bible and obscured by centuries of legend. Thanks to the quantum universe we inhabit, you can step through the veil of time and death in order to observe David yourself, guided by his nephew, army commander, and "fix-it man," Joab. Go where few people (apart from those who have had near-death experiences) have gone and returned: Sheol, Hades, Paradise, the Land of No Return. By the power and speed of thought, enter the multiverse of "life continuing" and let Joab show you firsthand his uncle David. But be warned, you will never again read the Bible as a tired, old text. Rather, it will sparkle with new expression and meaning. Author and Hebrew Bible scholar Jack Lawson opens the world of Hebrew narrative by retelling the David story afresh and placing it within a fictional setting for what simply becomes a compelling story.

“This is the story of King David told by his nephew and army commander, Joab, three millennia after the fact. Events now look quite different from those as told by the court journalist, whose records have come to us in the Bible. In his sixth novel, Jack Lawson makes us look again at David—with compassion and love, knowledge, wit and humor—yet with eyes wide open at a man as quintessentially human as ourselves.”

—Shlomo Izre’el, professor emeritus of Semitic linguistics, Tel-Aviv University

“King David’s personal complexity—as lover, father, warrior, and king—make him one of literature’s most compelling characters. But Jack Lawson not only narrates with imagination and humor; his life of scholarship in Semitic studies gives the tale historical authenticity. The result is a fresh and nuanced portrait and an engaging read.”

—Richard Prust, co-author of Personal Identity in Moral and Legal Reasoning

“A lively and imaginative novel, Joab presents the story of David in genre-bending ways that are sure to intrigue, surprise, and disrupt what readers thought they knew about the shepherd boy who became king.”

—Elaine A. Heath, author of Naked Faith

Jack N. Lawson is a retired pastor, prison chaplain, and teacher/scholar of the Hebrew Bible. Among his scholarly publications are The Concept of Fate in Ancient Mesopotamia (1994) and “Mesopotamian Precursors to the Stoic Concept of Logos” (1999). Since retirement he has become a writer of fiction works such as Doing Time, No Good Deed, Criminal Justice, The Woods, and Dirty Business. Lawson and his wife, Chris, live in Basse-Normandie.

An Unbiblical Book Promoting Dangerous Practices It is with great disappointment that I write this review. "Joab" presents itself as a biblical work, but in reality, it is one of the most unbiblical books I have ever read. From the beginning, the author urges readers to engage in practices that are clearly contrary to the teachings of the Bible. For example, the book promotes communication with the dead, an action that Scripture explicitly condemns in multiple passages (Leviticus 19:31, Deuteronomy 18:10-12). This is just one of the many dangerous and misleading practices that the author endorses. Furthermore, the interpretation of biblical texts is frequently manipulated to justify ideas that have no basis in God's Word. Instead of building up and guiding readers toward a deeper relationship with God, the book leads them down a path of confusion and error. The lack of respect for the integrity of the Scriptures and the promotion of ideas contrary to the Christian faith make this book not only useless but potentially harmful for any believer seeking to grow in their faith. I recommend anyone looking for genuine spiritual guidance to avoid this book. There are many other resources available that truly honor God's Word and help readers grow in their relationship with Him in a healthy and biblically sound way. Do not waste your time or your faith on this book.
