The poems in Wissahickon exist for one reason: to draw our attention to a natural world that is ensouled. Trees, rock, water, fungi, animals, fish, and birds--all participate in Spirit, and all are permeated with soul-stuff. The Christian, Druidic, Tantric, and classical viewpoints, often overlapping and folded into one another in these pages, all serve one end: to help us to see, feel, and know that the world around us has awareness--even consciousness--and that all the creatures with whom we share our planet are our elder siblings, because they were here before us.

Wissahickson is a book of poetry that speaks to the spirit of the land. The land has an ancient spirit full of mystery and wisdom that has been pillaged, damaged, and forgotten in modern times. Thankfully, Scott Robinson has taken the time to listen to this spirit and share that wisdom in the form of poetry. This book of poems is not only about the past; it is about a more hopeful future: weaving the sacredness of nature and human-nature connection back into the world.”

—Dana O’Driscoll, grand archdruid, Ancient Order of Druids in America

“Scott Robinson’s collection of poetry on the Wissahickon is a beautiful and evocative tribute to this iconic Philadelphia park. With lyrical language and keen observations, Robinson captures the spirit and essence of the Wissahickon, inviting readers to experience its magic for themselves and inspiring us to embrace a deeper sense of reverence and respect for the natural world.”

—Ken Norian, TSSF, minister general, Third Order of St. Francis

“In this collection, Third Order Franciscan Scott Robinson engages many poetic forms—sonnet, ballad, ode, haibun, tanka—to meditate on a beloved natural area, a gem (garnet?) of northwest Philadelphia, sanctuary for the entire City of Brotherly Love. Calling up echoes of Louise Gluck’s “The Wild Iris,” Wissahickon is a must-read for those seeking axioms of the self and the world around them.”

—Andrea Ross, author of Unnatural Selection: A Memoir of Adoption and Wilderness

Scott Robinson is a former associate professor of music at Eastern University and has written for Sojourners, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and Forward Day by Day. He is the author of The Dark Hills (2015).
