Overview

Henry Drummond was a talented natural scientist with a powerful faith. His combination of talents led to the scientific and spiritual musings that resulted in Natural Law in the Spiritual World. In the preface of Natural Law, Drummond states that, “No class of works is received with more suspicion. . . . than those which deal with science and religion,” yet he felt called to expound upon what he saw: namely that natural law and spiritual law were not separate from one another. As predicted, his work sparked a great deal of interest, commentary, and criticism among nineteenth-century scientists and theologians. Many, while generally approving, felt called to expand upon the conversation Drummond started, while others argued against it or expressed concern on its theological impact.

In his opening remarks of Natural Law in the Spiritual World, Henry Drummond queries, “Is there not reason to believe that many of the laws of the spiritual world, hitherto regarded as occupying an entirely separate province, are simply the laws of the natural world?” Aware that he was opening himself up to derision and criticism from both science and religion, Drummond nonetheless posed this question to other thinkers of the late nineteenth century. He outlined the natural law in the spiritual sphere, and the law of continuity, and claims that, “the spiritual is not the projection upwards of the natural; but the natural the projection downwards of the spiritual.”

Henry Drummond (1851–1897) was an evangelist in the Free Church of Scotland, who lectured on the natural sciences and became famous after writing Natural Law in the Spiritual World. He spent much of his life abroad as a missionary and wrote several books, including Tropical Africa and The Ascent of Man.

Francis John Bodfield Hooper penned this rebuttal to Henry Drummond’s Natural Law in the Spiritual World because he believed the terms Drummond used were poorly defined, leading to a work riddled with errors. Even the title, he contested, contained as many as 28 points of ambiguity in its definition. He goes on to illustrate his point in each section of the work, from “Biogenesis” to “Classification.”

Francis John Bodfield Hooper was a rector and nineteenth-century writer who wrote several books, including Palmoni: An Essay of the Chronological and Numerical Systems in Use Among the Ancient Jews.

On ‘Natural Law in the Spiritual World’ by a Brother of the Natural Man

  • Author: James Denney
  • Publisher: Alexander Gardner, Paisley
  • Publication Date: 1885
  • Pages: 69

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

James Denney found Henry Drummond’s Natural Law in the Spiritual World very interesting, practical, and valuable. Portions of it, however, he felt were too speculative—particularly the chapters on biogenesis, death, and eternal life. In thisvolume, Denney examines Natural Law in the Spiritual World and expounds upon the conversation that Drummond began the previous year.

James Denney (1856–1917) was a Scottish theologian and preacher in the Free Church of Scotland. In 1897, he was appointed professor of systematic theology at Free Church College in Glasgow, and in 1915, he was appointed principal of the college. Among his publications and works are “2 Corinthians” and “1 & 2 Thessalonians” in the Expositor’s Bible, as well as the Expositor’s Greek Testament commentary on Romans.

  • Author: T. Campbell Finlayson
  • Publisher: James Clarke & Co.
  • Publication Date: 1895
  • Pages: 90

Sample Pages: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

T. Campbell Finlayson’s Biological Religion is a collection of lectures given to provide an exhaustive and adequate examination of Henry Drummond’s Natural Law in the Spiritual World. Finlayson felt this critique necessary, due to the popularity of the book and its potential impact on the theology of the day.

T. Campbell Finlayson (1836–1893) was the congregational minister at United Reformed Church in Cambridge, and later at Rushholme, Manchester. Finlayson received an honorary doctorate of divinity in 1891. Among his works are Nehemiah: His Character and Work and The Meditations and Maxims of Koheleth.
