Overview

Few theologians have shaped the history of post-war theology in Germany as profoundly as Jürgen Moltmann. His works, widely translated and studied across the globe, have left a lasting impact on Christian theology worldwide. On April 8, 2016, Moltmann celebrated his 90th birthday, and the Gütersloher Verlagshaus honored him with a nine-volume edition of his major works. Following his passing on June 3, 2024, Moltmann’s influence continues to live on in the hearts and minds of many.

His groundbreaking 1964 work, Theology of Hope, was described by Der Spiegel as belonging to the “top tier of theological world literature.” With this book, Moltmann became the “herald of a new Protestantism.” Over the years, he further developed his theological vision across multiple volumes, creating a body of work that not only gained him international recognition but also revitalized theological discourse. His theology breathed new life into a discourse on God that had become weary and discouraged, offering fresh perspectives for contemporary faith.

Moltmann reinterpreted Christian theology and dogmatics in light of the challenges of a modern, mature world. For him, theology was never mere speculative thought about a transcendent divine realm; rather, it was a world-transforming practice infused with the spirit of messianic hope. Christianity, in his view, was always political—engaged with the world rather than detached from it.

This extensive 18-volume collection features Moltmann’s most influential works in German along with their English translation. Thus, it provides an unparalleled opportunity to engage with one of the most influential theological thinkers of our time. It invites readers to explore his enduring significance and to rediscover his theological vision in the context of today’s pressing global issues.
