Overview

Sidonius Apollinaris is widely considered the most important author of fifth-century Gaul. An aristocrat by birth, Apollinaris, a poet and diplomat, produced significant works in both pursuits—which unlike those of many of his contemporaries—have survived into modern times. The Letters of Sidonius collection, which comprises over one hundred letters written by St. Sidonius is the most complete source of information to be found on Roman provincial life in the fifth century. These two volumes are divided into nine books of letters and include an introductory overview of Sidonius’ life, as well as a list of the people mentioned in his letters, providing valuable insight into Roman life and culture among the aristocrats in Gaul.

Sidonius Apollinaris (c. AD 430–AD 489) was a diplomat and bishop of Auvergne in Gaul. He was an aristocrat whose poems and letters have survived into the present day, leading some to credit him as the most important author of fifth-century Gaul. His panegyrics on the emperors earned him favor and eventually led to a senatorial post and an appointment as bishop of Auvergne. He was imprisoned by the Goths, but later released by King Euric and returned to minister to his people until his death. He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church.
