All people deal with intrusive thoughts at times. All of us have some practices in our lives we are not proud of. Many would call these struggles sins. Why are there thoughts and deeds we hate, yet that recur so often in our lives?
The Bible teaches there is a real, supernatural source behind these thoughts and deeds. Satan is real but so is God. God’s word has all the truth and power we need to set us free from the influence of sin and Satan.
Satan will use the events of our personal lives to convince us that lies are true. He is very convincing. He will lie to us about God, about ourselves, about the gospel, and about all of life. He roots his lies in enough truth to make them very believable. Discerning them is not always easy. Satan is very crafty, shrewd, and subtle.
God’s word and Spirit are able to give us all that we need to take each sinful thought captive. Further, God supplies the truth that must replace Satan’s lies. God’s truth is the foundation for a holy life. God’s truth is the pure substance we need to replace the roots of our sinful practices.
“In this intensely practical, theologically rich book, Olan Stubbs gets down to the ‘why’ of our wandering from God. This is not a mere slap on the hand for reaching into sin’s cookie jar but an invitation to enjoy the feast of God’s abundant goodness. As a pastor I look forward to sharing this with both new believers and struggling, seasoned saints.”
—Chris Davis, Senior Pastor, Groveton Baptist Church
“Olan Stubbs has drawn on years of experience discipling college students, mature Christians, and ministry leaders to write a wise and helpful book that helps us grow in holiness and grace by attacking the roots of sin. Stubbs takes readers on a journey through Scripture, through centuries of Christian wisdom, and through reflection on contemporary experience, to discern the sources of sin, beginning with Satan’s lies. Join him in the paths of progress—and treasure the appendices, which are worth the price of the book.”
—Dan Doriani, Professor of Biblical Theology, Covenant Seminary
“Satan’s number one weapon to steal, kill, and destroy is deception, and our natural tendency to self-deceive makes us incredibly vulnerable to his lies. If we are going to live a life of freedom and victory like Jesus promised, we must be dialed into this reality. This book will not only help you identify the lies that are foundational to your sin struggles. It will also instruct you how to use the truth of God’s word to progressively bring freedom in your life from the sins that so easily entangle you.”
—Ted Shimer, Founder, The Freedom Fight
“If the doctrines of grace have become just an abstraction to you with little sense of spiritual warfare, Dr. Olan Stubbs will help you in making these ‘truth wars’ a living reality to your heart. Beyond offering simple solutions to attaining spiritual freedom, this book invariably removes obstacles and cultivates that ‘hunger and thirst after righteousness’ which is the only indispensable condition to being ‘filled.’ Dr. Stubbs is eminently and always scriptural and expository. He starts with the word and expounds it. It is exposition at its very best and highest.”
—Robert Davis Smart, Spiritual Formation Pastor At Large, Christ Church (PCA), Bloomington, Illinois
“Olan has provided the Christian community with another helpful tool. With great clarity, he teaches pew dwellers how to understand the war within, recognize the tactics of the devil, and use biblical tools to correct their thinking, which gives rise to their vulnerability to the enemy. As a biblical counselor with more than fifty years of counseling experience, as I read, I thought many times that Olan had been eavesdropping in my office—he echoed the biblical counsel offered. He does this in a contemporary, readable style.”
—Howard Eyrich, Director, Doctor of Ministry Program, Birmingham Theological Seminary
