“Jonah and Nahum present complementary aspects of God’s nature, his mercy and his justice (expressed in ‘anger’), with Jonah focusing on God’s steadfast covenant love (ḥeseḏ) and Nahum on God’s justice and wrath. Jonah presents God as one who is ‘compassionate, gracious … (and) abounding in steadfast love’ (Exodus 34:6–7a), whereas Nahum presents God as the ‘one who punishes sons and grandsons to the third and fourth generations for the iniquity of their fathers’ (Exodus 34:7b).
