This dictionary is gleaned from Hitchcock’s New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible, written by Roswell D. Hitchcock. Through a heroic effort, Hitchcock defined over 2,600 proper names mentioned in or related to the Bible, and this work is still widely used and studied today.
In Hitchcock’s New and Complete Analysis of the Holy Bible, Roswell D. Hitchcock provides “A Dictionary of Religious Denominations, Sects, Parties, and Associations.” From the Abyssinian Church to the Zealots, Hitchcock briefly describes all of the known denominations of his time, providing an overview of beliefs and historical facts for each entry—as well as other pertinent information, such as geographic distribution, when available. He prefaces with an overview of the population of the globe and list of religious groups with the highest numbers of people.
Roswell D. Hitchcock (1817–1887) was educated at Amherst College and Andover Theological Seminary. He was a professor of church history at Union Theological Seminary, which he served as president from 1880 to 1887. He was coauthor of The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles with Francis Brown.
