“For Paul, a holy life does not simply happen, though one cannot generate it by human effort. God actively seeks to create in his church the new people of God, to renew them to be like himself—righteous and holy. But such a program requires the believers’ efforts to ‘put off’ the old ways and to ‘put on’ the new ways. Now, in Christ they have the capacity to do that in very practical ways. Now that they are in the church, now that they are light, they must live like Christians—becoming what they are and putting away all their former deeds of darkness.” (Page 141)
“It appears that Paul placed his ministry in an interpretive frame whereby he viewed his own personal suffering for the sake of the gospel as an extension of Jesus’ own vocation of affliction.” (Pages 299–300)
“‘The way to be anxious about nothing is to be prayerful about everything.’” (Page 253)
“Klyne Snodgrass notes, ‘It is a letter of definition and encouragement. Paul sought to ground, shape, and challenge his readers so that they might live their faith.’31 Bruce, 245, puts his understanding of Ephesians’ purpose succinctly: ‘the letter was written to encourage Gentile Christians to appreciate the dignity of their calling, with its implication not only for their heavenly origin and destiny but also for their present conduct on earth, as those who were heirs of God, sealed with his Spirit.’” (Page 36)
“A thankful spirit crowds out selfish pride, checks fear, defuses anger, and directs one’s thoughts outwardly toward others.” (Page 253)
