Overview

These volumes in the Concordia Commentary Series give a theological exposition of the sacred Scripture. These commentaries enable pastors and teachers of the Word to proclaim the Gospel with greater insight, clarity, and faithfulness to the divine intent of the biblical text. This 28-volume collection from Concordia Publishing interprets Scripture as a cohesive whole centered in the person and work of Jesus Christ. Every passage bears witness to the good news that God has reconciled the world to himself through our Lord’s life, death, and resurrection.

The authors are sensitive to Scripture’s rich treasury of language, imagery, and themes, including such dialectics as Law and Gospel, sin and grace, death and new life, and folly and wisdom. They pay careful attention to the original Hebrew and Greek and shed further light on the text from archaeology, history, and extra-biblical literature. Finally, they apply Scripture’s message to the ongoing life of the church in terms of ministry, worship, proclamation of the Word, baptism, the Lord’s Supper, and confession of the faith in the joyful anticipation of the life of the world to come.

Resource Experts
  • Treats all the elements of traditional exegesis
  • Compares the original context and the contemporary context
  • Engages contemporary life and culture
  • Analyzes Scripture’s language, imagery, and themes
  • Pays special attention to the original Hebrew and Greek
I have a great deal of respect for this series. It takes serious regard of the biblical text in its original language, and deals with both textual difficulties and theology -- an impressive feat at a time when many commentaries are trying to avoid difficult details.

    Romans 9-16 is not included?

I have found each of this Concordia Commentary series helpful. I'm currently using Romans 9-16 by Michael P Middendorf and find it outstanding. Middendorf does great in comparing and contrasting with countless other leading commentators on Romans and concluding where he stands and why. He does careful analysis of the Greek and gives reasons for his conclusions. I like how this commentary series has the commentator's translation, followed by the textual notes and then the actual commentary including frequent relevant excurses of topics of interest and importance to understanding the book of the bible and the bible as a whole. Middendorf did an excellent job--one of significant help to the pastor.
