The method is simple but proven, and it uses simple tools—the Bible, the reader, some paper, and a pencil. Its purpose is to train the reader to see for himself what Luke wrote and how he wrote it. Many Christians think they can’t discover truths from God’s Word on their own, so they rely solely on “second-hand” Bible knowledge through sermons, books, and audio recordings. Irving Jensen’s Enjoy Your Bible is a confidence-builder, showing readers that they have the necessary tools for pursuing self-directed Bible study. It is also a motivator, as Jensen encourages his readers to explore God’s Word and shares his own enthusiasm for Bible study.
God gave us one book, and he wrote it for us to study, to analyze, and to live in accordance with it. The Bible is a large book made of 66 smaller books, written by about 39 authors over a period of 1,500 years. To read and study such a volume would seem impossible, but God has given us a lifetime.
Irving Jensen, well-known author and Bible teacher, knows the importance of a lifetime of Bible reading. In How to Profit from Bible Reading, he shares how to read a passage or book of the Bible and come away with a greater knowledge of what the writer intended.
Few things are more important for a Christian than understanding the Bible. The Bible focuses the believer’s attention on the work of Christ and is God’s revelation to mankind. It tells us what we need to know to grow as Christians and become influential for Christ’s cause in our neighborhoods and communities.
Unfortunately, many are unsure about how to study the Bible and keep that study exciting and relevant. To address such needs, Irving Jensen provides help. Using the inductive method of Bible study and an analytical chart to map out the richness of the Bible, he shows how reading God’s Word can be the highlight of your day. God’s design of the Bible is so simple a child can understand much of it, yet so complex that even the greatest scholars can be challenged by it for a lifetime. But just as the traveler must learn to read a road map before he begins a trip, so a Christian should know something about methods of Bible study if his time in the Word is to be consistent and life-changing. Through this book, Jensen makes reading that map much easier.
In this volume, Irving Jensen takes his readers along the Bible’s amazing journey while answering common questions about the Bible. Journey of the Bible covers the origins of the Bible, the canonization of the 66 books, and explores the process of translation. Jensen writes simply in order to communicate the Bible’s incredible “life story” to even the youngest Bible student with the goal of bringing his readers to deeper faith.

Readers can study each book of the New Testament at their own pace. This volume teaches the inductive method of study, which helps readers apply the truth of God’s Word to daily life. The Layman’s Bible Study Notebook is perfect for personal study, group study, personal devotions, or as a supplemental study aid for other Bible study groups.
Irving Jensen believes Christians often fail to enjoy their Bible because they rely too much on second-hand results of other people’s study. However, it is important for Christians to study God’s Word for themselves. Simply Understanding the Bible offers three levels at which to approach do-it-yourself Bible study. The “Getting Started” level provides helpful background information on each book of the Bible. Readers who want to survey the Bible quickly may then follow the “First Reading” level through the 66 books. Lastly, those willing to spend more time in Bible study can use the “Building Tools” level where readers can get started on their own programs of personal discovery in God’s Word.
Irving L. Jensen (1920-1996) was professor emeritus and former chairman of the Department of Bible at Bryan College in Dayton, Tennessee. He was a widely read and respected author who wrote numerous popular study books geared towards an inductive approach to Scripture.
