Top Highlights

“Third, these verses show us that there may be knowledge of Scripture in the head, while there is no grace in the heart.” (Page 8)

“If we want to have sweet comfort in suffering and trial, we must keep constantly in view our Saviour’s humanity” (Page 6)

“Let us mark this well. There is nothing which shows our ignorance so much as our impatience under trouble. We forget that every cross is a message from God, and intended to do us good in the end. Trials are intended to make us think—to wean us from the world—to send us to the Bible—to drive us to our knees. Health is a good thing; but sickness is far better, if it leads us to God. Prosperity is a great mercy; but adversity is a greater one if it brings us to Christ. Anything, anything is better than living in indifference and dying in sin. Better a thousand times to be afflicted like the Canaanite woman and, like her, flee to Christ, than live at ease like the rich ‘fool’ (Luke 12:20), and die at last without Christ and without hope.” (Pages 130–131)

“King Herod sent to inquire of the priests and elders ‘where the Christ was to be born’ (verse 4). We axe told that they gave him a quick answer, and showed an accurate acquaintance with the letter of Scripture. But they never went to Bethlehem to seek the coming Saviour. They would not believe in him when he ministered among them. Their heads were better than their hearts. Let us beware of resting satisfied with head knowledge. It is an excellent thing when rightly used. But a person may have much of it, and still perish everlastingly. What is the state of our hearts? This is the great question. A little grace is better than many gifts. Gifts alone save no one; but grace leads on to glory.” (Page 8)

J. C. Ryle

John Charles Ryle (1816-1900) began his service to the Lord as a minister of the Gospel. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, was ordained in 1841, and became a leader of the evangelical party in the Church of England. Ryle labored in parish churches within the Church of England for almost forty years. In 1880 he was designated dean of Salisbury and then became the First Bishop of Liverpool. He stayed in that role until 1900, shortly before his death.

Ryle came to international prominence as preacher, Bible expositor, and author. Today he is best known for his plain and lively writings on practical and spiritual themes. He deliberately used this style to reach ordinary people. The great aim of his ministry was to encourage strong and serious Christian living. His tracts and books sold in the millions in the late 1800s. Many of these have been republished in modern times. Ryle has been noted for his doctrinal essays and polemical writings. His bestselling titles include Expository Thoughts on Mark and Holiness: Its Nature, Hindrances, Difficulties and Roots which can both be found in the J. C. Ryle Collection (18 vols.). He also contributed three volumes in the Crossway Classic Commentary Collection (13 vols.).
