God’s Heirs, Part Seven of Barnhouse’s commentary, covers Romans 8:1-39. Here, Paul shows that the true child of God is free from the law of sin and death in Jesus Christ. Romans 8 clearly sets forth God’s remedy in Christ for man’s complete ruin in sin. Not only are believers redeemed, they are children and heirs of God. Barnhouse expounds on this joyous fact in 21 chapters, including “No Condemnation,” “Walking in the Spirit,” “God’s Work in Us,” and “The Real Secret of Living.”

“Our text shows us four things about those who are unregenerate, or who live according to the flesh. First, we have the description of their life, they live after the flesh. Second, we have a picture of their nature, they mind the things of the flesh. Thirdly, we have announcement of their state, they are in death. Lastly, we have the mind of God about their condition, they cannot please God.” (Page 24)

About Donald Barnhouse

Donald Barnhouse (1895–1960) pastored the historic Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia for 33 years. He studied at several schools, including Biola, Princeton Seminary, Eastern Seminary, and the University of Pennsylvania.

Out of a desire to spread God’s Word to a large audience, Barnhouse began a radio broadcast that featured preaching. That radio program, The Bible Study Hour, was heard on over 400 stations and was later telecast. The program continues to air today under the name Dr. Barnhouse & the Bible. Because of the radio program’s popularity, Barnhouse was asked to speak at many Bible conferences.

In 1931, Barnhouse founded the monthly magazine Eternity. For over 30 years, he wrote a column in every single issue. He has also written several books, including the titles in Expositions of Bible Doctrines: Taking the Epistle to the Romans as a Point of Departure (4 vols.).
