This brief treatise is a response to Baptists who criticized Bunyan's views as set out in "John Bunyan on the Terms of Communion and Fellowship of Christians." The issue under discussion is whether or not unbaptized believers should be admitted to the communion table.

But that the doctrine of baptism is not the practice of it, not the outward act, but the thing signified; and that every believer hath that, must argue you more than too bold to deny it.” (Volume 2, Page 626)
Bunyan has always been one of the most popular of the Puritans—no doubt because, while possessing the Word-centeredness as well as the depth of doctrine and experience of other Puritans, he also possessed a warm simplicity of style.
