This volume completes the publication in English of Kraus’s classic work on the Psalms in the Biblischer Kommentar series. Like the first volume, Psalms 60–150 offers a fresh translation of each Psalm, a bibliography, a discussion of the form and origin of the passage, and a verse-by-verse commentary.
“The profession of innocence in v. 13* permits us to learn that the psalmist belongs among the צדיקים. Why must the צדיק suffer while the רשׁע enjoys prosperity? This was the incalculably difficult question that raised bodily suffering to the point of intolerability. In this affliction the sufferer took refuge with Yahweh (v. 28aβ*), he came to the place of proximity to God (v. 28aα*)—the sanctuary (v. 17a*). Here the ‘end’ (אחריח, v. 17b*) was proclaimed to him who was tormented. And at the same time a certainty was granted him that overcame all affliction and temptation. Psalm 73 reports this wondrous event under the signature of thankfulness and with the purpose of proclaiming the victory over the great threat against faith by confession and teaching.” (Page 86)
“Psalm 73 is in the first place narration (לספר in v. 28*) and only in the second place teaching” (Page 85)
“interrelation of experience and teaching would therefore have to be noted particularly.” (Page 85)
“question asked especially by S. Mowinckel, E. Würthwein, and H. Ringgren.” (Page 85)
“eference of the statements to an individual in the community is ruled out” (Page 85)
The most thorough study of the Psalms in recent years, it contains manna for preachers.
