Overview

“The modern media saturates our senses with trash. It also provides stiff competition for one who hopes to talk about grander and purer themes. Is it possible to produce a magazine attractive enough, journalistically competent enough, and yet scriptural enough that it can be useful and used? We don’t know. We have pledged one year to find out. We believe it is needed. Do you agree?”

Those words come from the introduction to the first issue of Christianity Magazine, published in 1984. The editors, Dee Bowman, Paul Earnhart, Ed Harrell, and Brent Lewis, soon had their answer: a resounding “yes.” For 16 years, Christianity Magazine flourished as a premier monthly Christian magazine. And now all 16 years, all 176 issues, are available for Logos Bible Software!

Christianity Magazine provides scriptural, practical, resonant, and inspiring articles that will build faith and hope. Along with its regular monthly columns, each issue spotlights a different theme and features a variety of voices from trusted Christian leaders.

Dee Bowman was born in Estelline, Texas, in 1934, Dee began his career at 16 working as a janitor at a local radio station. When the sportscaster was sick, Dee read the sports news and a career in broadcasting was launched. Over 20 years later, he left the airwaves and began full-time work in 1971 with a church in Lubbock. Five years later, he and his family moved to Deer Park, Texas, to serve the Southside Church of Christ as an evangelist. During his association with Southside, Bowman developed a structured two-year program for young men who wanted a Paul-Timothy relationship to hone their ability to preach. The Florida College courses offered the opportunity to put the Bowman program into an academic setting. During his 14-year tenure at Florida College, his approach has been received enthusiastically. Bowman holds a degree in communications from the University of Alabama. He continues each year to hold gospel meetings with churches throughout the US.

Paul Earnhart was born March 2, 1931, in Hughes County, Oklahoma. He received his formal education at Abilene Christian College (BA, 1953) and College of St. Thomas (MA, 1971). Earnhart began preaching more than 50 years ago during his college days in Texas, but has since preached in Nigeria, West Africa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri and now in Louisville, Kentucky. He is the author of Invitation to a Spiritual Revolution: Studies in the Sermon on the Mount. Many of his articles appeared in Christianity Magazine from 1984–1999.

Ed Harrell was professor emeritus of history at Auburn University, received a BA degree from David Lipscomb College in 1954 and MA and PhD degrees from Vanderbilt University in 1958 and 1962. He has written seven books on American religious history, including The Churches of Christ in the Twentieth Century: Homer Hailey’s Personal Journey of Faith; Oral Roberts: An American Life; and Pat Robertson: A Personal, Religious, and Political Portrait. He is co-editor of Minorities in Modern America, a series published by Indiana University Press, and a series entitled Religion and American Culture by the University of Alabama Press. He is the author of over 50 articles in scholarly publications. His current research interests focus on the history of the modern Pentecostal and charismatic movements in America.

Sewell Hall has written monthly columns in Christianity Magazine. His pieces titled “Hall Marks” and “Lights in the World” were collected and published as Hall Marks/Lights in the World: A Collection of Articles in 2006. Hall is currently a pastor at Embry Hills Church of Christ in Atlanta, Georgia.
